The men's decathlon at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp took place on August 20 and 21, 1920. 23 athletes took part.

At first, this competition was not part of the Antwerp Games program. The organizers decided that the pentathlon would be enough for eventing athletes. Finally, the discipline was added to the program.

Olympic champion was the Norwegian Helge Løvland, ahead of the American Brutus Hamilton and the Swede Bertil Ohlson .

Conducting the competition

The implementation of the competition, which took place for the second time at the Olympic Games, differed from the competition in 1912 in that the ten disciplines were only carried out on two days. On August 20, the athletes completed the 100-meter run , the long jump , the shot put , the high jump and the 400-meter run . The 110-meter hurdles , the discus throw , the pole vault , the javelin and the final 1,500-meter run followed on August 21 . So the process was the same as we find it to this day.

Date: 20./21. August 1920

After his fifth place in the pentathlon , Helge Løvland won the gold medal in the decathlon in front of the pentathlon sixth Brutus Hamilton. The performances were far below the level of the 1912 Olympic champion Jim Thorpe . The Olympic runner-up from 1912 Hugo Wieslander would have been just before Løvland. However, the general conditions in Stockholm were much better than here in Antwerp .

The winner Helge Løvland was 29 years old at the time of the competition. Until 1988 he was the oldest Olympic champion in the decathlon.

The scores result from the then valid new rating system from 1920. To better classify the performance, the points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 are also given. According to this table, which is valid today, there would have been various other placements. But these comparisons are only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis. This is most noticeable in the pole vault , where people jumped with completely different poles than they do today.
