Summary

There were two favorites for this competition: a duel was expected between the Czech world record holder , runner-up world champion and silver medalist of the last games in Sydney Roman Šebrle and the reigning world champion Tom Pappas from the United States. The Estonian Olympic champion from 2000 Erki Nool and the Czech world champion from 2001 Tomáš Dvořák were also there again here in Athens , but were no longer quite the form from their years of great success. Other candidates for medals or top placements were the World Cup third Dmitri Karpow from Kazakhstan, the US American Bryan Clay and the British World Cup third from 2001 Dean Macey.

Over 100 meters , the first discipline, Clay - 10.44 s, Karpov - 10.50 s - and the Russian Nikolai Averyanov - 10.55 s were fastest in the third run. The top favorites Pappas and Šebrle were clearly behind with times in the range of 10.80 s.

Clay was also the best decathlete in the long jump with 7.96 m. Šebrle was not far behind with 7.84 m, the third best distance was achieved by Karpow with 7.81 m, and the Dutchman Chiel Warners also showed a good performance with 7.74 m. Clay had fully played out his strengths and led with 2039 points. He was 52 points ahead of Karpov, 97 points ahead of Warners and 125 points ahead of Šebrle.

In the shot put , Šebrle with 16.36 m and Pappas with 16.17 m as the best of this exercise exceeded the 16-meter mark. Karpov - 15.93 m, Macey - 15.73 m - and the Belarusian Alexander Pachomenko - 15.69 m - were the next-placed athletes. Clay also showed a good performance with 15.23 m and maintained his lead with 2843 points. The distances were now closer, however. Karpow was second, only nine points behind, while Šebrle was also third, only 56 points closer to Clay. Behind them were Warners and Pappas, a little further apart.

In the high jump there were four athletes who jumped higher than 2.10 m. Macey was the best with 2.15 m. The Hungarian Attila Zsivoczky, the Jamaican Claston Bernard and Šebrle each achieved 2.12 m, Karpow had 2.09 m at the end, Clay 2.06 m, while Pappas, who had managed 2.21 m four years earlier , this time had to be satisfied with 2.03 m. With that, Karpow took the lead with 37621 points. He was leading ahead of Šebrle and Clay, who were both 19 points behind. They were followed by Macey - 30 points behind, Bernard - 68 points - and Pappas - 117 points.

In the 400-meter run , the final discipline of the first day, Karpov consolidated his lead. With 46.81 s he was the only one to break the 47-second mark. The next best decathletes, Pappas and Warners, were more than a second behind him. Šebrle stayed within his possibilities with 48.36 s, while Clay now clearly lost ground with 49.19 s. Macey was also only a little faster with 48.97 s. After five disciplines, Karpov led with an excellent 4689 points and had thus worked out a lead of 95 points on Šebrle. Clay was third, fifty points behind Šebrle. Another hundred points back, Macey was fourth ahead of Pappas - 274 points behind Karpow.

On the second day, the trend from the end of the first day continued at the top. Over 110 meter hurdles Karpow was the only decathlete to stay under fourteen seconds with 13.97 seconds. The closest to him came Warners, the Jamaican Maurice Smith and the German Stefan Drews with 14.01 s each. But Šebrle and Clay were not far behind with 14.05 s and 14.13 s respectively. Karpov, who now had 5676 points on his account, extended his lead to 105 points ahead of Šebrle. The order behind it had hardly changed. Clay was third, 164 points behind. Pappas in fourth, Bernard in fifth and Warners in sixth were already more than two hundred points behind the leader.

Karpov continued where he left off in the discus throw . The record he achieved was 51.65 m. Clay was also very strong with 50.11 m. Behind were Smith with 49.02 m, Šebrle with 48.72 m, the Italian Paolo Casarsa with 48.66 m, Macey with 48.34 m and Pappas with 47.39 m. In the interim standings, things always looked better for Karpov, who had now reached 6572 points. This was followed by Šebrle - 166 P back, Clay - 287 P, Macey - 379 P, Pappas - 390 P - and Bernard - 449 P back.

The eighth exercise, the pole vault , slowed Karpov's high altitude flight considerably. When he jumped 4.60 m, he was in this discipline at the end. The best pole vaulter was Nool with 5.40 m, the American Paul Terek scored 5.30 m, the Austrian Roland Schwarzl 5.10 m. Drews, the Russian Alexander Pogorelow, the German Florian Schönbeck and Šebrle jumped exactly 5.00 m. Clay and Warners each reach 4.90 m. Karpov was still at the top with 7362 points. Šebrle was only 36 points behind. Clay had also moved up to 97 points. Behind that, the gap to the top was still considerable. Warners was fourth, ahead of Macey and Bernard.

At the javelin throw , Šebrle and Clay were the best. Šebrle achieved the greatest distance with 70.52 m, Clay was not far behind with 69.71 m. Karpow threw 55.54 m and lost his lead, Šebrle and Clay pulled past him. After the penultimate exercise, Šebrle had taken the lead with 8213 points. Clay was 63 points behind him, while Karpow was 180 points behind in third. Warners and Macey followed well behind, Zsivoczky was now sixth and Nool seventh. This made Šebrle the clear candidate for the gold medal. Both he and Clay were not top runners in the middle distance and the gap to the next places was just too big.

The Argentine Santiago Lorenzo was the fastest 1,500 meter runner in the field. In the first run he achieved 4: 23.08 minutes. Šebrle crossed the finish line in 4: 40.01 minutes in the second race, in which the best placed athletes started. Clay was right behind him in 4: 41.65 min and Karpow achieved two places ahead of Šebrle 4: 38.11 min. The three athletes were thus in the back field of the second race, which the French Laurent Hernu won in 4: 24.35 minutes, but had won the medals due to their previously large lead. Roman Šebrle set a new Olympic record as Olympic champion with 8893 points . Bryan Clay won silver 73 points behind him, and Dmitri Karpow was bronze medalist 95 points behind. Fourth place went to Dean Macey. His gap on Šebrle was 479 points. Chiel Warners followed in fifth and Attila Zsivoczky in sixth. Laurent Hernu's strong 1500 meter run brought him to seventh place ahead of Erki Nool, Claston Bernard and Roland Schwarzl.

After Robert Změlík's gold medal in 1992 - at that time still for Czechoslovakia - this was the second Olympic victory for a Czech decathlete.
