Comment on the term "world record" :
The International Athletics Association ( IAAF) has only held official world records in marathons since January 1, 2004. Before that, the term “world best” was used here because of the different track conditions. Paul Tergat's best time from 2003 was subsequently recognized as a world record. In addition, the IAAF counts the time run by Khalid Khannouchi in the London Marathon in 2002 - 2:05:38 h - as the first official world record among the world records.
Routing
The route began in the town of Marathon and led south along national road 83, circling the burial mound of the Athenians who fell in the battle of Marathon . The course then crossed the city of Nea Makri. After ten flat kilometers the first climbs came. At Rafina , the route turned west onto National Road 54. Via Rafina-Pikermi , Pallini and Gerakas you reached Agia Paraskevi at km 32 , where the highest point of the route was reached at 240 meters above sea level. From there it went downhill through Chalandri , Cholargos and Goudi to the core city of Athens . The finish line was in the Panathinaiko Stadium , where the runners still had to complete one lap.
initial situation
The favorites initially included the reigning world champion Jaouad Gharib from Morocco, the Spanish vice world champion Julio Rey, the two-time World Cup third Stefano Baldini from Italy and the Kenyan Paul Tergat, who used to be a very successful 10,000 meter runner, now the world record holder on the marathon route. Alberto Chaíça from Portugal and the Japanese Shigeru Aburaya, who were next placed at the last World Championships, were also among the contenders for a good result.
Race course
August 29, 2004, 6:00 p.m. Athens local time ( UTC + 2 )
The start took place at temperatures around 30 ° C. The athletes approached the race very carefully because of these high temperatures. At twenty kilometers, the Brazilian Vanderlei de Lima was able to pull away a little from the field. In the following period he increased his lead continuously until after thirty kilometers he had run out of about fifty seconds.
Now the pursuers tightened the pace, led by Baldini, Tergat and the US athlete Meb Keflezighi. A promising race to catch up began because there were still many kilometers to go. Tergat later lost touch and in the end fell back to eleventh place. De Lima's lead melted to around twenty seconds by 35 km. At 36 km there was an incident. De Lima was pushed off the track by the suspended Irish priest Cornelius Horan , whereupon the Brazilian fell into the crowd on the edge of the track. Several spectators helped him up so he could continue the race while Horan was arrested by the Greek police. De Lima, who had already struggled a lot to defend his lead, couldn't find his way back to his running rhythm, he suffered from cramps and pain. At 38 km he was overtaken by Baldini and Keflezighi, who now continued to run at a high pace.
As a result, Stefano Baldini shook off his last companion and won with 34 seconds ahead of Meb Keflezighi. 42 seconds behind the American, Vanderlei de Lima also crossed the finish line to great applause and saved the bronze medal. As a special honor for his sportsmanship, he was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal by IOC President Jacques Rogge . Just fifteen seconds after de Lima, Briton Jon Brown crossed the finish line in fourth, ahead of the two Japanese Shigeru Aburaya and Toshinari Suwa. The Kenyan Erick Wainaina finished seventh ahead of the Portuguese Alberto Chaíça.
Vanderlei de Lima was the first Brazilian medalist in the marathon .
