Three Russians and two Polish women qualified for the final. The field was completed by one participant each from Bulgaria, Great Britain, Canada, Morocco, Romania, Spain and Turkey.

The reigning world champion Tatiana Tomaschowa from Russia was the favorite to win . Her strongest competitors were her two teammates Natalja Evdokimowa and Olga Jegorowa and the British Olympic champion over 800 meters Kelly Holmes. The Moroccan Hasna Benhassi was difficult to assess on this route. But at least she had won the 800 meter silver just behind Holmes five days earlier.

The first rounds were led by the Russians with Evdokimova in the lead. The first 400-meter split was 1: 03.59 min, the second 1: 05.05 min. The race was not slow, but neither did it go towards a world or Olympic record . The field remained largely together in an elongated formation. The pace of the third lap - 1: 04.18 min - was within the scope of the first two 400-meter sections. The race really only started in the target curve. Holmes attacked from fifth position and tried to get past the Russians on the outside. When it hit the home stretch, Evdokimova was still just ahead. But her strength was now clearly weakening. Kelly Holmes played out her sprinting skills and also became an Olympic champion on the 1,500 meter course . Behind her, Tatiana Tomaschowa won silver, the Romanian Maria Cioncan came bronze in front of Natalja Evdokimowa and Bulgarian Daniela Jordanowa. The two Polish women Lidia Chojecka and Anna Jakubczak-Pawelec finished sixth and seventh.

Kelly Holmes was the first UK female medalist and Olympic champion in the discipline.
