Elena Guerra , full name Elena Lucia Guerra Barbero , (born January 20, 1976 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan athlete .

Career

The 1.63 m tall Guerra began her career as a professional athlete at the age of 18. In 2001 she was Uruguayan champion over 1500 and 5000 meters. She was a member of the Uruguayan squad at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , to which she was called up in August 2004 as the last of the 16 Uruguayan participants. There she started on the 1500 meter course and failed with a time of 4: 35.31 minutes in the lead. She clearly missed the personal best she set in 2000 of 4: 27.98 minutes on this route. In September 2001 she took part in the Ibero-American Championships in the half marathon organized by the Confederación Atlética del Uruguay (CAU), the Uruguayan Ministry of Sport and Youth and the Intendencia Municipal of Montevideo, and finished fifth. At the cross-country South American Championships in 2005 she reached 8th place over 4 km. She finished seventh on the 8 km course. That made her the best Uruguayan starter. In the same year, shortly afterwards, she also took part in the World Cross Country Championships and finished in 83rd place.

Guerra is still today (as of June 15, 2015) the holder of the Uruguayan national records on the 3000 , 5000 and 10,000 meter distances .
