La República is a Spanish-language, Uruguayan , nationally distributed daily newspaper from Montevideo .
Usually affiliated with the leftist political spectrum, the newspaper was founded on May 3, 1988. Federico Fasano Mertens is the founder and director . The newspaper also appears on Sundays with the free weekly supplement “Bitácora”.
In January 2011, the newspaper, which was heavily indebted at the time, changed hands when the Argentine entrepreneurs Gustavo Yocca and Miguel Jorge paid Federico Fasano one million US dollars for 60% of the shares. Another five million US dollars should flow from investors on the part of the debt reduction and product improvements. Fasano remained in the position of director of the newspaper. In matters of content, however, the new owner Yocca, former director of the Argentinian local newspaper El Liberal , secured decision-making authority. He also announced an ideological aggiornamento for the newspaper. The REG Sociadad Anonima acts as the publisher of the newspaper .
In January 2012, the financial difficulties of the newspaper and the company that runs it, Multimedio Plural , persisted, so that there was speculation about a closure of the newspaper as a result of layoffs and outstanding salary and vacation payments. At the beginning of February 2012, however , Multimedio Plural announced that a closure was not currently planned.
