final

August 16, 2016, 10:30 p.m.

All three Ethiopians qualified for the final. There were also two US runners and two British runners as well as one starter each from Kenya, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden.

A duel was expected between the Ethiopian world champion Genzebe Dibaba, who was also the world record holder , and the Kenyan vice world champion Faith Kipyegon. For the places behind these two, among others, the Dutch World Cup third and European champion from 2014 Sifan Hassan and the two fourth and fifth placed at the last World Championships Dawit Seyaum from Ethiopia and Laura Muir from Great Britain came into question.

The final race started at a leisurely pace - 400 meter split time 1: 16.57 min - and was led by the British Laura Weightman. At the beginning of the second round, the Ethiopian Besu Sado and the British Laura Muir took the lead, but they were soon replaced by Dibaba.

Kipyegon and Hassan worked their way forward together, while Dibaba began to increase the pace - second lap: 1: 10.54 min / third lap: 56.79 s. At the start of the last lap, Dibaba was ahead of Kipyegon and Muir. The trio had created a gap to the chasing field and Muir had to let go a little later. On the back straight, Kipyegon pushed the leader and pulled past her. Hassen, as well as the US runners Jenny Simpson and Shannon Rowbury, fought their way past Muir in the target curve with a clear gap behind them. Dibaba now had nothing more to add, so that Kipyegon crossed the finish line with an advantage of almost one and a half seconds. Behind silver medalist Dibaba, Simpson won bronze in front of her teammate Rowbury. Hassan followed in fifth, followed by the Swedes Meraf Bahta and Muir.
