One participant each from France, Great Britain, Jamaica, Canada, the Netherlands, Panama, Turkey and the USA had qualified for the final.
The top favorite was the Olympic champion from 2008 and 2012 , world champion from 2009 , 2011 , 2013 , 2015 and world record holder Usain Bolt from Jamaica, who had announced in advance that he wanted to break his own world record. Of the three world bests of the year over 200 meters , only the US runner LaShawn Merritt, actually a 400 meter specialist, made it to the final. His teammates Ameer Webb and Justin Gatlin were eliminated in the semifinals, as was 2012 silver medalist Yohan Blake. Canadian bronze medalist over was highly 100m Andre De Grasse, who s had set up in the semifinals with 19.80 a new Canadian national record.
Because of a rain shower before the final, the track was damp. Bolt on lane six had a good start and was able to quickly compensate for the cornering requirement on Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre, lane seven, and Dutchman Churandy Martina, lane eight. At the end of the corner, Bolt was two meters ahead of Martina. He was in second place, slightly ahead of Alonso Edward from Panama on lane three. Merritt, the Briton Gemili and De Grasse followed closely behind. The Turk Ramil Guliyev was already beaten.
At the start of the home stretch, De Grasse pushed himself to the front of the field of pursuers. Edwards and Merritt fell behind. At the finish, Bolt was three meters ahead of De Grasse. Lemaitre and Gemili crossed the finish line one and a half meters behind the Canadian, Martina a tenth of a second behind Merritt, Edward and finally Guliyev. After evaluating the photo of the finish line, Lemaitre was rated third with three hundredths of a second ahead of Martina.
Usain Bolt won the third consecutive gold medal in the discipline. He is the first athlete to repeat his Olympic victory in this discipline twice. Overall, it was his eighth Olympic victory. In 2008 and 2012 he won gold in the 100 and 200 meters, and in 2012 in the sprint relay. After this victory he was now with seven gold medals in third place of all track and field athletes in the number of Olympic victories and in sixth place in the number of total medals. In front of him was the sprint relay with very good prospects for another gold medal.
