Ramon Gittens (born July 20, 1987 in Bridgetown ) is a Barbadian athlete who specializes in the sprint .

Athletic career

Ramon Gittens gained his first international experience at the Central American and Caribbean Junior Championships in Bridgetown in 2002 , where he was eliminated in the first round over 100 and 200 meters and won the silver medal with the Barbadian 4 x 100 meter relay. At the CARIFTA Games in 2003 in Port of Spain , he won the bronze medal over 100 meters and silver with the relay and finished fourth over 200 meters. This was followed by participation in the Youth World Championships in Sherbrooke , in which he reached the semifinals in both individual disciplines, but no longer competed there. In 2004 he again took part in the CARIFTA Games in Hamilton , where he finished fifth over 100 meters and sixth over 200 meters. He also won the bronze medal with the Barbadian relay.

In 2005 he was fourth over 200 meters and sixth over 200 meters at the CARIFTA Games in Bacolet . At the Central American and Caribbean Championships (CAC) in Nassau , he was eliminated in 10.98 s in the first round of the 100-meter run. He then took part in the Pan American Junior Championships in Windsor , where he was fourth over 200 meters and eighth over 100 meters. In 2006 he won the bronze medal over 100 meters at the CARIFTA-Gams in Les Abymes . At the CAC Junior Championships in Port of Spain he won silver with the relay and over 200 meters and bronze over 200 meters. Over 200 meters he qualified for the Junior World Championships in Beijing , where he finished fifth in 21.25 s.

In 2007 he retired from the NACAC Championships in San Salvador and the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in the first round over 200 meters. In 2008 he reached the semi-finals over 200 meters at the CAC Championships in Cali , but did not start there again. He was then at the U23 NACAC championships in Toluca de Lerdo fifth over 100 meters and eliminated over 200 meters in the first round. In 2009 he retired from the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Havana in both sprint disciplines in the preliminary run, but qualified in both for the World Championships in Berlin , where he retired with 10.47 s and 21.33 s in the first round.

Two years later he finished fifth at the CAC Championships in Mayagüez over 100 meters, for which he qualified again for the World Championships in Daegu , but was eliminated there in 10.42 s in the first round. He then took part in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara and reached the semi-finals there. In 2012 he qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in London , where he was eliminated in the run-up with 10.35 s. In 2013 he won the bronze medal over 100 meters at the CAC championships in Morelia in 1.0.19 s. At the World Championships in Moscow he was eliminated in the individual competition in 10.31 s in the semifinals. With the relay he retired in the first round in 38.94 s.

In 2014 he finished fourth at the World Relays in the Bahamas with the 4 x 200 meter relay and was eliminated from the preliminary round with the 4 x 100 meter relay. At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , he finished eighth in 10.25 s. At the IAAF World Relays 2015 he finished second in the B-final with the 100-meter relay and retired from the preliminary round with the 4-by-200-meter relay. At the Pan American Games in Toronto he won the silver medal behind Andre De Grasse in 10.07 s and finished fourth with the relay. He then won silver over 100 meters and bronze with the relay at the NACAC championships in San José . In addition, the World Championships in Beijing made it to the semifinals .

In 2016, Gittens took part in the World Indoor Championships in Portland , where he won the bronze medal in the final over 60 meters with a new national record of 6.51 seconds. He again took part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro over both sprint courses and retired over 200 meters in 20.58 s in the first round and over 100 meters in 10.25 s. He was also the flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the games. In 2017 he won the silver medal at the World Relays with the 4 x 100 meter relay and qualified over 100 meters for the World Championships in London, where he was eliminated with 10.24 seconds in the first round . In addition, he retired with the Barbadian relay with 39.13 s in the lead .

In 2018 he took part in the Commonwealth Games in the Australian Gold Coast for the second time and was eliminated there over 100 meters with 10.44 s in the semi-finals. He also took fifth place with the Barbadian relay team.

In 2008 and 2016 Gittens was Barbadian champion over 200 meters and in 2012, 2013 and 2016 over 100 meters. He is a graduate of St. Augustine's University in Raleigh .
