The tanker Lindanger is the type ship for seven product tankers whose dual-fuel two-stroke engines are powered by methanol

history

So far, methanol has not played a role in the propulsion of ship engines. Only in connection with the conversion of the Stena Germanica , whose four-stroke diesel engines were converted to methanol, did shipowners and shipbuilders deal with this fuel. In the meantime, methanol has been approved by the classification societies and the engine manufacturers Wärtsilä and MAN B&W offer suitable engines.

The RoPax ferry Stena Germanica , built in Spain in 2001 and extended by around 50 meters to 240 meters at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven in 2007, is the first ship whose four-stroke engines run on methanol. It was rebuilt in 2015 as part of a research and development project. The conversion took six weeks and was funded by the EU “Motorways of the Seas” initiative. The total costs amounted to 22 million euros, half of which the EU gave as funding.

The tanker Lindanger was ordered in November 2013, laid down in November 2015 and delivered in April 2016. The Lindanger is the first ship with a two-stroke engine to run on methanol.

In 2018, another four tankers of this class were ordered from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard , which, like the seven previous ones, will operate for the Waterfront Shipping company.

Ship description

The Lindanger is the first ship in a 50,000 tdw tanker class that was delivered to the Norwegian shipping company Westfal-Larsen in Bergen in 2016 . With a length of 178 m, width of 32.2 m and draft of 12.9 m, the Lindanger product tanker is measured at 30,945 GT. It has been classified by DNV GL , flies the Norwegian flag and is based in Bergen.

Four of the tankers with methanol as an alternative fuel, besides the Lindanger , Mari Boyle , Mari Jone and Leikanger , were built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. (HMD) for the Norwegian shipowners Westfal-Larsen and Marinvest. The dual-fuel main engines of the type B&W 6G50ME-9.3 LGIB with a nominal output of 10,320 kW at 100 rpm are driven with methanol and MGO as ignition oil. They were developed by MAN B&W in Copenhagen and built by the engine and mechanical engineering department of Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The other three product tankers Manchac Sun , Taranaki Sun and Cajun Sun were built for the Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) shipping company and came from the Japanese shipyard Minami Nippon Shipbuilding. The main engines of these ships were built and supplied by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES).

Waterfront Shipping is a global shipping company headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, specializing in the transportation of bulk chemicals and clean petroleum products. A fleet of 26 modern tankers with capacities between 3,000 and 50,000 tdw transports cargoes to the most important international markets in North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America. The Waterfront Shipping Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Methanex Corporation , which is considered the world's largest producer and supplier of methanol and has its own globally distributed terminals and tank facilities.
