The Stena Germanica is a RoPax ferry of the Stena Line built in Spain . The ship was put into service in 2001 as Stena Hollandica, extended in 2007 in Germany at Lloyd Werft , awarded for it in 2008 and initially renamed Stena Germanica III in 2010 and shortly thereafter Stena Germanica . Since 2010 it has been used together with Stena Scandinavica on the Kiel – Gothenburg route, where it replaced the previous ferry of the same name . The ship sails under the Swedish flag with the home port Gothenburg.

history

Construction in Spain

The ship before renewal as Stena Hollandica (June 2005)

The ferry was built as the fourth of the four-unit Seapacer class under construction number 81 at the Astilleros Españoles Puerto Real shipyard in Cadiz, Spain. The floating took place on May 6, 2000, the delivery on February 5, 2001. With a length of 188.3 m, a width of 28.7 m and a draft of 6.2 m, a measurement of 33,770 GT resulted  . The load capacity was 10,670 tdw, the loading meters were specified as 2,500 m and the cabins had space for 400 passengers. The ship was delivered on February 9, 2001. It started sailing under the Swedish flag with its home port in Gothenburg . From February 16, 2001, the ship sailed under the Dutch flag with home port Hoek Van Holland.

Use in the English Channel

From March 9, 2001, the ship operated the Harwich - Hook of Holland route .

Remodeling in Germany

At the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven, the ship was extended from March 12 to May 3, 2007. To do this, the ship was cut apart in the floating dock and the stern was floated out. Then a prefabricated 52 m long and 28.70 m wide midship section with new cabins, restaurants, bars and infrastructure was used and then the aft section was swam in again. The parts of the fuselage were then welded together, the cables and pipelines were reconnected and the affected interior spaces were completed. The cabins, restaurants and the leisure area with shopping and entertainment facilities in the fore and aft ship were modernized during this shipyard period and adapted to the style of the new facilities. This conversion was honored as exemplary with the ShipPax Award 2008 for the ferry conversion .

With the new length of around 241.3 m, a width of 28.7 m and a draft of 6.1 m, a new measurement of 51,837 GT resulted. The increased load capacity is 17,200 dwt, the loading meters have been increased to 3,900 m and the passenger capacity in 495 cabins is now 1,300 passengers.

Use between Kiel and Gothenburg

On May 16, 2010, the Stena Hollandica in service between Hoek van Holland - Harwich was replaced by the first of the two new super ferries built in Wismar with the traditional name Stena Hollandica (2010), which, like its sister ship, has a measurement of 64,039 GT. The old Stena Hollandica (2001) left Hoek van Holland on the same day and arrived at the Polish shipyard Remontowa on May 19, 2010 for overhaul and modernization. In July 2010 she was given the name Stena Germanica III and started sailing under the Swedish flag with her home port in Gothenburg . The ship was christened on August 27, 2010. Since August 31, 2010, it has been used in the traditional Scandinavian service Göteborg – Kiel. On September 8, 2010 it was given the new name Stena Germanica .

drive

The ship is propelled by four Sulzer-CCM 8ZAL40S diesel engines , each with eight cylinders, with a total output of 23,000 kW, which drive two propellers via two gearboxes . The speed is around 21  knots .

Retrofitting

The Stena Germanica after the drive has been converted (Kiel, April 2015)

From the end of January to the end of March 2015, the ferry was the first RoPax ferry of the Stena Line to use methanol as the (main) fuel. The new drive complies with the more stringent environmental guidelines that came into force on January 1, 2015. The 22 million euro conversion was carried out at the Remontowa shipyard in Poland and financially supported by the EU initiative “Motorways of the Seas”. The ballast tanks have become methanol tanks, marine diesel can still be used - dual-fuel operation. The Stena Feronia replaced the Stena Germanica during the renovation. In the long term, Stena Line plans to convert all ferries. The use of scrubbers , LNG and methanol is tested . Which ship is ultimately converted and how depends on the type of ship and the route.

Incidents

On the morning of August 11, 2013, the port ferry Älvsnabben collided with the Stena Germanica lying on the bank in Gothenburg . At the time of the accident, there were two crew members and ten passengers on the harbor ferry who could later be evacuated by a pilot boat . The evening departure to Kiel could be carried out as planned.
