Ferry connection Kiel – Gothenburg

The ferry connection between Kiel and Gothenburg has been served by the Swedish shipping company Stena Line since 1967 . It is 236 nautical miles (441 kilometers) long.

1967-1979

The first Stena Germanica

In February 1966, Langesund mekaniske Verksted in Langesund, Norway, launched the first Stena Germanica . She was baptized on April 21, 1967 . From April 24, 1967, she ran on the Kiel – Gothenburg line. It had 384 beds, a total of 1,300 passengers and 220 cars. In the summer of 1967, 20,000 passengers and 7,000 vehicles were carried. The ship remained in service with interruptions until January 1979.

From July 7, 1972 to 1982, the Stena Olympica served the route.

The first Stena Scandinavica was delivered on June 27, 1973 . She drove the route until January 1978.

From April 10, 1978 to September 14, 1981, the Scandinavica operated the route.

1981-1988

On September 14, 1981, the 1973 Princess Birgitta first operated the route. It was renamed Stena Scandinavica on May 10, 1982 . She drove the route until April 5, 1987 and then switched to the Gothenburg - Frederikshavn route .

From 1982 to 1988 the Crown Princess Victoria sailed the route Kiel - Gothenburg.

1987-2011

The ships Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica , put into service in 1987 and 1988 respectively , were built in Gdansk (Poland) and renovated in 2006. They were used from 1987 to 2011 on the route between Kiel and Gothenburg .

The Stena Germanica left the ferry Kiel-Gothenburg on August 31, 2010. She changed under the name Stena Vision on the route Karlskrona (Sweden) to Gdynia (Poland). After the Stena Germanica was replaced by the Stena Germanica III , the Stena Freighter was used in parallel with the Stena Scandinavica in order to ensure the same daily transport capacity in both directions. The Stena Scandinavica left the route on April 19, 2011 and also switched to the route from Karlskrona to Gdynia under the name Stena Spirit . The fuel consumption on the Kiel – Gothenburg route was between 28 and 40 tons.

Originally Stena Line ordered two more sister ships, the Stena Polonica and the Stena Baltica , the orders were canceled and the hulls sold.

Since 2010

Since September 1, 2010, the Stena Germanica III has been serving Die Route. On September 21, 2010 it was renamed Stena Germanica .

The Stena Scandinavica IV has been serving the route since April 19, 2011 . It was renamed Stena Scandinavica on May 10, 2011 .

Despite their similar dimensions, the ships are by no means identical. The Stena Germanica belongs to the Seapacer class and was built in Spain in 2001. The Stena Scandinavica belongs to the Seamaster class and was built in Korea in 2003.
