The Engelsburg-Gymnasium in Kassel is a private Christian high school sponsored by the sisters of St. Maria Magdalena Postel .

history

In 1892 the sisters of St. Maria Magdalena Postel opened a Catholic girls' grammar school for grades 1 to 10 in Kassel . At the request of Jewish parents, non-Catholic students were accepted for the first time in 1935, as the National Socialist government had expelled Jewish students from other schools. Four years later, in 1939, the government closed the school. On October 22, 1943, the school building at Ständeplatz was destroyed in British bombing raids on Kassel.

The Engelsburg-Gymnasium was reopened in 1947 with grades 5 to 10 and was recognized as a training school for trainee teachers in 1951. Four years later, in 1955, Castel Sant'Angelo became a state-recognized grammar school. The first Abitur examination took place in the same year . The school has been accepting boys since 1979.

Since 2000, it has also been possible to graduate from high school with only eight years of age (→  G8 branch ) or since 2005 it has been compulsory.

The weekly church service takes place in the surrounding churches of Kassel and in the school auditorium, separated by grades. From grade 9 onwards, participation in ecumenical worship is no longer compulsory. The nuns withdraw to pray in the chapel.

There are two sports halls in the school. There is fitness equipment in the small sports hall, the larger one is one floor higher. For some classes, physical education takes place in the police sports hall of the city of Kassel or outdoors on the Hessenkampfbahn in Karlsaue (weather permitting). In the main building are the classrooms of the 5th and 6th grades, as well as the teachers' room and the secretariat. Chemistry, biology and physics rooms can be found in the science wing, which is also part of the main building.

The side wing or "Siemens building" takes its name from the previous owner of the building, Siemens AG. The building has four floors with classrooms and an underground car park for teachers. On the first floor there is a library, in which students can also do internet research on computers, and work rooms. The classrooms for grades 7–9 are located in the side wing. The old building contains the two music rooms and some classrooms for the upper level. Major events, theater performances and church services take place in the auditorium.

The so-called Red Palace is intended exclusively for high school students. Here are some classrooms for the upper level and in the basement a storage space for a few thousand books.

There are also two common rooms and a quiet work room. The lounge is located in the main building and is accessible to everyone. The quiet work room is part of the student library and is intended to be used to do homework, read books from the library, prepare lectures, etc. The second lounge is the “crypt”, a lounge for upper school students. It is located in the basement of the Red Palace.

In addition, the school has a diving pit, two table tennis tables, a basketball court and two soccer fields in the schoolyard.

Partner schools

Castel Sant'Angelo works in close collaboration with many different schools around the world. Annual exchange programs are organized with the partner schools.

Environmental commitment

As Kassel's only school, Castel Sant'Angelo offers a solar group. This was founded in 2006. In April 2009, the solar system was expanded - financed by donations and campaigns organized by Solar AG. For example, share certificates were sold with which students or parents could participate in the expansion of the solar system. Since Friday, May 15, 2009 there has been a display board above the main entrance, which shows the daily and total output of the solar system, as well as the CO 2 savings in kilograms.
