The A. Regina was a ferry that entered service in 1967 as Stena Germanica for the Swedish Stena Line and was the first ship of this name to operate on the Kiel - Gothenburg route . The last ship used between the islands of Puerto Rico ran aground on February 15, 1985 off the island of Mona and had to be abandoned. The wreck of the A. Regina was scrapped in 1989.

history

The Stena Germanica was sold under construction number 54 in the Langesund mekaniske in Langesund and launched on February 7, 1966. After the takeover by Stena Line on April 15, 1967, the ship was put into service on April 24, 1967 on the route from Gothenburg to Kiel .

In the same year the Stena Germanica switched to the route from Gothenburg to Frederikshavn , before being chartered to CNAN in November 1967 and used between Marseille and Algiers . On December 12, 1967, the ship returned to service for the Stena Line between Gothenburg and Kiel.

In February 1968 the Stena Germanica received additional cabins during a renovation in Sölvesborg . In the following years the ship was used on changing routes.

In the summer of 1972 she drove between Kiel and Korsör , the following year between Stockholm and Mariehamn , before returning to the Gothenburg – Kiel route in April 1974. In the next two years she drove on the Gothenburg – Kiel – Korsör and Gothenburg – Frederikshavn routes , but from 1975 also took over charter trips, including for B&I Line between Swansea and Cork .

From October to December 1975 it was a hotel ship in the port of Stavanger .

From June to November 1976 the Algiers-based Entreprise Nationale de Transport Maritime des Voyageurs (ENTMV) chartered the Stena Germanica to use it again between Marseille and Algiers. After the charter expired, the ship returned to Gothenburg, where it was laid up .

In 1978 the Stena Germanica was chartered to the British and Irish Steam Packet Company (B + I Line) and used between Cork and Swansea before being used as a transport and accommodation ship by Royal Dutch Shell UK Exploration & Production Division from May 1978 . For this purpose, a platform for helicopters was attached to the stern of the ship, which could later be removed. In October 1978 the ship was used by Chevron Corporation for the same purpose, before it returned to the liner service from Gothenburg to Kiel on December 21, 1978.

In February 1979 the Stena Germanica was sold to the French - Italian shipping company Corsica Ferries and renamed A. Regina . From April 1979 the ship, now registered in Panama , was in service between Sanremo , Ajaccio , Tunis , Valletta , Taormina , Capri and Bastia . Although the A. Regina continued to transport vehicles, these trips were marketed as cruises under the name "Sea Club" .

In 1984 the ship was used as a floating casino in the port of Bastia before it was chartered to Dominican Feries in October 1984 and used between Mayagüez and San Pedro de Macorís .

On February 15, 1985, the A. Regina ran aground during another crossing from Mayaguez to San Pedro de Macoris off the uninhabited Mona Island , 40 miles west of Puerto Rico , and partially sank. The ship was written off as a total write-off and lay as a wreck off the island for another four years before it was scrapped on site by Titan Maritime Industries in 1989.

Sister ship

The sister ship of the A. Regina was the Stena Britannica , also commissioned in 1967 , which was last used as Sardegna Bella and was scrapped in Turkey in 2001 .
