history

The company was founded in 1974 as a joint venture of the Irish Shipping Limited , the Fearnley & Eger and the Swedish company Lion Ferry A / B founded. Originally operating as the Irish Continental Line on the route from Rosslare in Ireland to Le Havre in France with the ferries St. Patrick and St. Killian , Irish Shipping Limited ended up in liquidation in 1984. It was sold to the Irish Continental Line and got its current name. In 1992 Irish Ferries took over the British and Irish Steampacket Company Limited (B & I Line) and thus the ferry service between Dublin and Holyhead in Wales.

In January 2007 Irish Ferries announced the purchase of the ferry Kronprins Harald for the Ireland-France traffic. The ferry served the route Kiel - Oslo for the Norwegian shipping company Color Line until September 2007 . From the end of 2007 it served as the successor to the Normandy under the name Oscar Wilde on the Rosslare – Roscoff and Rosslare – Cherbourg routes between Ireland and France.

In January 2018 Irish Ferries announced the sale of the Jonathan Swift to Balearia . It was replaced in April 2018 by the Dublin Swift , which was acquired in 2016 and chartered to the Military Sealift Command as Westpac Express until 2018 .

In December 2018 the WB Yeats was delivered by the shipyard Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft . The ship will be used on the Dublin - Cherbourg route. The Rosslare - Roscoff and Rosslare - Cherbourg routes operated by Oscar Wilde were discontinued in early 2019 and the ship was sold.

In January 2018 a ferry measuring 67,300 GT and costing 165.2 million euros was ordered from the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft . She should be delivered in 2020 and replace the Ulysses on the Dublin - Holyhead route . The contract was terminated in June 2020 following the bankruptcy of the shipyard.
