The Kaitaki is a ferry of the New Zealand shipping company Interislander , which was put into service as Isle of Innisfree for Irish Ferries in 1995 and has been in service between Picton and Wellington since August 2005 .
history
The Isle of Innisfree was laid on August 3, 1994 under construction number 963 at Van der Giessen-De Noord in Alblasserdam and launched on January 25, 1995. After delivery to Irish Ferries on May 15, 1995, the ship began the ferry service between Dublin and Holyhead on May 23 . The ship sailed under the flag of Ireland with home port Dublin.
In April 1997 the Isle of Innisfree switched to the route from Rosslare to Pembroke Dock . After another four years of service for Irish Ferries, the ship was decommissioned on 16 May 2001 and then in Dublin and from June 2001 first Le Havre launched .
In March 2002 P&O Ferries chartered the Isle of Innisfree , modernized it and put it into service as the Pride of Cherbourg between Portsmouth and Cherbourg in August 2002 . From January to June 2005 the ship was chartered to Stena Line . Stena Line operated the ship, which was now called Stena Challenger , between Karlskrona and Gdynia .
In 2005 the ship was chartered to the New Zealand shipping company Interislander. On August 14, 2005, the ship, renamed Challenger , arrived in the port of Wellington and began the ferry service between Wellington and Picton on August 22. In April 2007 it was given the name Kaitaki , which in the Māori language has about the same meaning as Challenger . After almost twelve years of charter, the parent company KiwiRail bought the Kaitaki from Irish Ferries. The ship continues to operate between Picton and Wellington and is the largest unit in Interislander's fleet.
