It is active in Scandinavia , England-Ireland and the Baltic States . The shipping company owns 35  ferries , and in 2016 they carried 7.3 million passengers, 1.6 million vehicles and 2 million loading units . The Stena Line operates 20 routes between the Netherlands and Great Britain , on the Irish Sea and on the Baltic Sea between Denmark , Sweden , Germany , Poland and Latvia .

history

The Stena Germanica , in use from 1967–79

Sten Allan Olsson (1916–2013), who came from the island of Donsö in the southern Gothenburg archipelago , founded Sten A Olssons Metallprodukter in 1939 , from which today's Stena AB developed . In 1946 he bought the first ferry and got into the shipping business, the actual Stena Line was founded in 1962 with the takeover of the Skagenlinjen from Gothenburg to Skagen . In 1967 the route Kiel - Gothenburg was opened, in 1982 the Sessanlinjen and Stena Line merged to the Stena Sessan Line (one year later it was changed back to Stena Line) under the new board member Dan Sten Olsson. In the 1980s the business was expanded to include additional routes and in 1988 the company went public on the Stockholm Stock Exchange .

The Stena Danica from 1969

In the mid-1990s, Stena Line began operating on the English Channel and the first high-speed ferries of the High-Speed Sea Service type were put into service, the Stena Explorer was up to 80  km / h and the largest catamaran in the world. Duty-free sales in the EU ended in 1999 , which had a negative impact on the ferry companies. In 2001, the Stena Line was completely privately owned again and withdrew from the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

The
Stena Baltica, put into service in 1986

Stena Line expanded its freight business, so routes on the North Sea and the Irish Sea were acquired. In 2012 the freight routes from Scandlines (including the Königslinie ) were bought, and in 1999 the Swedish company Scandlines AB had already been bought. At the beginning of 2013, Stena Sea Line was founded, which took over a ferry route in the Black Sea between Derince , Istanbul and Chornomorsk , and Stena Daea Line , which operates a route between Vladivostok, Zarubino and Sokcho in Russia and South Korea.

Due to the high demand on the Karlskrona - Gdynia route, Stena Line deployed a third ferry in 2013. She worked as Stena Alegra . In September the ship was arrested due to severe safety deficiencies. The Stena Alegra was launched in Gdina and then chartered to New Zealand . As of November 24, 2013, a new Stena Baltica was put into service. She has been operating the route since November 24, 2013.

On the royal line Sassnitz - Trelleborg, rail planning was restricted from July 2014 due to the decline in freight traffic and the Trelleborg ferry was decommissioned, launched and finally sold in early 2016. Since then, rail freight traffic has been handled on the Rostock - Trelleborg route. In 2020 the Sassnitz was also withdrawn.

In 2016, four ships of the E-Flexer class were ordered from AVIC-Weihai. The Stena Estrid, the first ship in its class, has been in service between Holyhead and Dublin in the Irish Sea since early 2020 .

On December 31, 2019 [obsolete] the Denmark Terminal in Gothenburg will be closed. The company is currently looking for a new location with the port administration. For cost reasons, the Stena Carisma ferry was decommissioned and launched on August 19, 2013.

Lines and ships

In 2011, a total of 32 ferries operated on 19 of its own routes in Scandinavia and around Great Britain. Stena Line has operated 23 routes worldwide since 2013. The Trelleborg , Skåne , Sassnitz , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Ask ferries , acquired when Scandlines was acquired in mid-2012, as well as the chartered ships Scottish Viking , Urd and Watling Street were repainted in the Stena Line colors.
