The Hermannsfeste ( Estonian Hermanni linnus ) is a medieval fortress in Narva , Estonia . It is located on the banks of the Narva River .
The fortress was founded by the Danes in the middle of the 13th century . In 1345 the fortress was sold to the Teutonic Order by the Danes together with Narva and East Estonia . After its dissolution, it was owned by Sweden from 1558 to 1704 and then by Russian . Like most of Narva, it was almost completely destroyed in World War II. The fortress, which has now been restored, is now a museum .
Narva was the easternmost castle of the Teutonic Order. Directly opposite, on the other bank of the river, is the Russian fortress Ivangorod .
