The Stena Alegra is a ship of the Swedish Stena Line , which is currently in service in New Zealand as Kaiarahi .

history

The ship was ordered in March 1996 from the Spanish shipyard Astilleros Espanoles, Factoria de Sevilla. The keel was laid on April 15, 1997, the launch in February 1998. The ship was delivered in September 1998 and was launched as a type ship of the Racehorse class as Dawn Merchant . It was initially used by the Turkish shipping company UND RoRo in the Mediterranean between Istanbul and Trieste . From 1999 to 2005 the ship was in service for various shipping companies in the Irish Sea and the English Channel .

From the end of 2005, the ship, which was renamed Europax Appia in November of that year, was to be used again in the Mediterranean by an Italian shipping company. This mission did not materialize. In 2006 the ship was renamed Pau Casals and was used on various routes in the western Mediterranean until November 2008. It was then chartered to the Lithuanian shipping company Terrabalt, which used the ship as Ave Luebeck until the beginning of 2009 . It was then used again in the Mediterranean as a T Rex .

Since March 2010 the ship has been used again by Norfolkline in the Irish Sea and since May of that year by LD Lines as a Norman Trader in the English Channel. In 2011 he worked for P&O Ferries and Stena Line between Ireland and the United Kingdom. In early July 2011 the ship was launched off Falmouth .

In May 2013 the ship was sold and then came back into service as Stena Alegra for the Stena Line. In September the ship was arrested in Gdynia due to severe safety deficiencies. On October 28, 2013, the ship ran aground off Karlskrona as a result of hurricane Christian . The Stena Alegra was then replaced by the Stena Baltica and launched in Gdynia.

At the end of November 2013, the New Zealand shipping company Interislander announced that it would charter the Stena Alegra in order to maintain operations in Cook Street between Wellington and Picton while the Aratere was being repaired . The Stena Alegra began service in New Zealand in mid-January 2014. The charter ended on July 5, 2014. On July 6, 2014 the ship set course for Singapore .

Since August 2015, KiwiRail has chartered the ship for at least five years, replacing the more than 30-year-old Arahura . For this, it was renamed Kaiarahi in July 2015 .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by four Wärtsilä diesel engines (type 9L38) with a total output of 23,760  kW . The motors act on two controllable pitch propellers and accelerate the ship up to 24  knots .

The ship has 1,950  meters of gauge for rolling loads (e.g. vehicles and trailers). The height below deck is 5.20 meters. 57 double cabins are available for passengers.
