The Garde-Dragoner-Kaserne is a listed building at Mehringdamm  20, 22 and 28 in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district . The barracks main building, together with the later incurred out-buildings and its land, the Dragoon area .

History and function of the building

The building was erected as barracks between 1850 and 1854 according to plans by the military construction officers Ferdinand Fleischinger and Wilhelm Drewitz . It is 188 meters long, three storeys high and has a gray, gequaderte cement plaster - Facade . The design is reminiscent of a medieval fort with its crenellated towers placed on the corners of the building and the entrance area . This effect is supported by the arched windows arranged in pairs .

The building initially served the first Battalion of the 8th Infantry - Regiment as a barracks. Ten soldiers each occupied a crew room measuring around 12 m × 5 m. NCOs were able to move into a small apartment on the side of the entrance towers with a living room and kitchen. In the basement there was a dining room that was approximately 20 mx 12 m. In 1855, after a two-year construction period, a riding school and an exposed brick building with four stable wings were added. This produced three courtyards, one of which is the foot drill , the other two were used for riding exercises. In 1889 more riding arenas and horse stables were built. The property at that time comprised 47,000 square meters.

In the period from 1855 to 1919 the 1st Guards Dragoon Regiment "Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland" and parts of the 2nd Guards Dragoon Regiment "Empress Alexandra of Russia" used the building complex. During the November Revolution on January 11, 1919, these troops stormed the Forward Building on Lindenstrasse , killing seven occupiers. During the subsequent evacuation of the publishing house, over 390 prisoners were brought to the barracks and some were badly mistreated. In 1921 the building was converted into a commercial park. The building has been used as a tax office since 1923. In the foyer , a plaque commemorates the events of the November Revolution.

There has been a dispute since the beginning of the 2010s about the redevelopment of the Dragoon area, which the Federal Real Estate Agency had sold at short notice. This applies above all to the former stables and farm buildings on the site, which are used by small businesses, an organic supermarket and the Club Gretchen . An investor planned to demolish and build luxury apartments. In areas that are not under monument protection, rental apartments and commercial premises are to be built by 2016. The non-profit association Upstall Kreuzberg eV was founded in July 2011 for the purpose of public participation in the development and planning process for the former barracks and the town hall block . V. for social and sustainable urban development . In 2013 Urbanitas Berlin Barcelona organized the kick-off event in one of the old horse stables.

However, after the capital city contract negotiated in May 2017 , the city of Berlin now wants to build social housing here.
