The RaceHorse class (in part on the type vessel as Dawn Merchant class hereinafter) is a class of formerly four Ro-Pax - ferries . One ship in the series was converted into a residential and offshore support ship in the early 2010s .
history
The ships were built for Cenargo International between 1997 and 2000 at the Astilleros Espanoles (AESA) shipyard in Seville , Spain . The first two units came into service for the shipping company Merchant Ferries, which belongs to Cenargo International, between Liverpool and Dublin (the first Dawn Merchant built after a short charter with Und RoRo in the Mediterranean between Istanbul and Trieste ). From April 2002 they drove for the shipping company Norse Merchant Ferries, which was created by the merger of Merchant Ferries and Norse Irish Ferries. The last two units were chartered to the Norfolk Line , which they used between Dover and Dunkerque .
At the end of 2005 Norse Merchant Ferries was taken over by Mærsk . The ships, some of which were chartered to other shipping companies, were assigned to the Norfolk Line. In the following years the ships, originally named after racehorses, were sold. They are still in use. The ship, built as a Brave Merchant , was converted into a residential and offshore support ship in 2012/2013.
The Murillo, built in 2002 for the Spanish shipping company Trasmediterránea , was based on the design .
description
The vessels are of four four-stroke - nine cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer Wärtsilä (type: 9L38) each with 5,940 kW power driven. Two motors are housed in each machine room. They act in pairs on a controllable pitch propeller via reduction gears . Four shaft generators driven by the main engines , two each with 1400 kW and 640 kW output, and two generators driven by Wärtsilä diesel engines (type: 6L20) with 880 kW output, are available for power generation. The ships are equipped with two bow thrusters . They have a stabilizer with rolling tanks .
The ships are equipped with two vehicle decks - deck 3 and deck 5 - with a total of around 2000 lane meters . On deck 3, the main deck, there are around 875 gauge meters with six lanes and on deck 5 above around 1075 gauge meters with eight lanes. The vehicle decks are designed for vehicles weighing 45 t. The main deck is accessible via a stern and bow ramp . The stern ramp is 15 meters long and the entrance to the ship is 17 meters wide. The bow ramp is 17 meters long and 4.5 meters wide. It is located behind a side-opening bow visor . The two vehicle decks are connected to one another by ramps in the ship. The lower vehicle deck is completely closed, the rear area of the upper vehicle deck is open at the top. At the front there is the superstructure built over three decks. The ceiling height of the vehicle deck is 5.2 meters. For vehicles with temperature-controlled cargo, there are 40 power connections that are fed by the diesel generators.
The two ships initially chartered to Norfolk Line were adapted for their use to the requirements of Norfolk Line in order to be able to load and unload both vehicle decks simultaneously in Dover and Dunkerque and thus offer a faster turnaround with more departures. For this purpose, the ships were equipped with an additional gate that can be opened upwards and a driveway on the forecastle , via which the upper vehicle deck can be reached. In addition, the stern ramp was adapted and direct loading and unloading of the upper vehicle deck was made possible at the stern of the ships.
The passenger facilities are located on decks 7 and 8, including 57 double cabins and 100 recliners. The facilities for the crew members are located on deck 9 . The ships are designed for up to 47 crew members. In the front area of cover 9 is closed over the entire width of the ship bridge .
