The Aratere was built under construction number 1570 in Spain for the Wilmington Trust Company. The keel was laid on November 10, 1997, the launch in 1998. The ship was initially 150 meters long and measured with 12,596 GT or 3,779 NRZ. The passenger capacity was 400 people. 1,005 gauge meters were available for vehicles and 425 meters on four lanes for railway wagons. In 2011 the ship was lengthened by 30 meters in a shipyard in Singapore.
The ship sails under the flag of New Zealand. The home port is Wellington .

The Aratere is used on the route between Wellington ( North Island ) and Picton ( South Island ). The ship crosses the Cook Strait . Driving time is around three hours over a distance of 92 km.
technical description
The Aratere has a diesel-electric drive . The electricity for the drive by four Wärtsilä - diesel engines with a capacity of each 3,680 kW , which are coupled to four ABB generators. In addition, two further Wärtsilä diesel engines with an output of 1,600 kW each are installed to drive two electric generators.
The four drive motors act on two fixed propellers via gears . The ship reaches a maximum speed of 19.5 kn .
The ship is divided into six decks.
