history

The Seafreight Highway off Larne (1988)

The ship was as 1981 Easy Rider for a Greek shipping company under the hull number 2119 on the shipyard Nouvi Cantieri Aquania in Marina de Carrara built. Initially it was used in the Mediterranean. Later it drove as the Seafreight Highway between Dover and Zeebrugge or between Holyhead and Dun Laoghaire.

Since 1991 the ship has been sailing under the name Urd . In September 1997 it was sold to the German-Danish ferry company Scandlines , which used the ship in the Baltic Sea. Scandlines sold the ship to the Swedish Orient Line on September 1, 2012 . The ship has now been chartered to Stena Line .

Accident on May 3, 2012

On May 3, 2012, Nils Holgerson, who was coming from Sweden, collided at around 6:15 p.m. in the port of Travemünde with the Urd , which was loaded at the Skandinavienkai . During the collision, the Nils Holgerson tore a three by three meter hole at the level of the waterline in the hull of the Urd , so that considerable amounts of water penetrated it and the Urd sank to the bottom. The water ingress could be stopped. The bulwark of the Urd was massively damaged above the waterline . Part of the cargo from the Urd , which was used on the Liepāja - Travemünde route, was also damaged. People were not injured in the collision.
