The Nils Holgersson is a RoPax - ferry the German ferry operator TT-Line .
Origin of name
The use of the fairy tale characters Nils Holgersson from the novel of the same name " Little Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey with the wild geese " by Selma Lagerlöf and Peter Pan for naming their ships follows a tradition of the TT-Line that goes back to the founding years. The current Nils Holgersson is already the sixth ship of the TT-Line with this name .
history
The Nils Holgersson ran on August 19, 2000 with the SSW ferries and special ships GmbH in Bremerhaven from the stack , the naming ceremony was performed by Dr. Brigitte Oetker. Problems with the new propeller nacelle drive system postponed delivery to the shipping company on both ships. After repeated tests, the ship was delivered to the TT-Line on July 16, 2001.
commitment
The Nils Holgersson runs together with the sister ship Peter Pan on the Baltic Sea between Travemünde ( Germany ) and Trelleborg ( Sweden ). Sometimes there is a short charging stop in Rostock – Warnemünde . The journey time with today's ferries is between seven and a quarter and nine and a half hours for night trips. The Nils Holgersson runs daily on the 10:00 a.m. departure from Trelleborg to Travemünde, is there according to the calendar day between 17:15 and 18:30 and drives back to Trelleborg at around 22:00 Reached 7:30 a.m. The sister ship Peter Pan starts at the same time in the opposite direction. In addition, two further departures with the RoPax ferries Nils Dacke and Robin Hood are offered on this route . (As of August 2010)
Accident on May 3, 2012
On May 3, 2012 compared 18:15 collided Nils Holgersson in the port of Travemunde from Sweden coming with the freight ferry Urd of Scandlines and ripped a three by three meter hole on the waterline in the side wall so that significant amounts of water in the Urd invaded. The water ingress could be stopped. The bulwark of the Urd was massively damaged above the waterline . Part of the cargo from the Urd was also damaged. People were not injured. The Nils Holgersson had 63 passengers on board.
During the investigation, a technical defect could be ruled out as a cause of the accident as well as alcohol consumption by those responsible. It was suspected that the skipper was misconduct, which is why criminal proceedings were initiated against him in consultation with the Lübeck public prosecutor's office for endangering shipping traffic. In the final report of the Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation , the cause of the accident was found to be that the drive of the ferry was still in "sea operation" when it called at Travemünde and that the pod drives could therefore not be turned sufficiently far to safely stop the ship and turn it as intended .
Machine system and drive
The Nils Holgersson is equipped with a so-called pod drive . Very good maneuvering properties are achieved through these rotatable drive pods. When driving in harbors where maneuvers are carried out in confined spaces, the drive system is operated in the "Revierfahrt" mode, whereby the gondolas can be freely rotated through 360 °. Outside the port at sea, in "sea operation", the gondolas can only be swiveled by 35 ° to port or starboard for safety reasons. As a result, it is not easily possible to turn the drives 180 ° to "machine back", since such a maneuver would damage the drive at "full speed ahead".
Due to the relatively tight space in the engine rooms, the total output of the diesel-electric machine system must be generated by a total of five diesel engines . The four MaK -M43 engines run at a speed of 500 / min and with Siemens - generators of the type 1DK4839-6BE06-L coupled. They generate a total of 26,170 kVA of electrical power. The MaK-M32 diesel engine drives a Siemens 1DK4839-6BE05-L generator at 600 rpm, which generates a further 2,760 kVA.
The Nils Holgersson is one of the first ferries to be propelled with propeller gondolas from Siemens- Schottel (“Propulsor”). The special feature of the SSP 10 type nacelles used is their design with one pulling propeller and one pushing propeller per nacelle. Each 3-blade propeller has a diameter of approx. 4.50 m and consists of a nickel-aluminum-copper-tin alloy.
To ensure stability, the Nils Holgersson carries approx. 2,640 m³ of water in ballast tanks. The ship is equipped with a pair of Blohm + Voss S700 fin stabilizers to dampen roll movements . As a maneuvering aid, two transverse thruster control systems from the Norwegian manufacturer Brunvoll are installed in the bow area . The systems work with controllable pitch propellers that run at a constant speed of 249 rpm.
Cabins and on-board facilities
The Nils Holgersson can accommodate up to 744 passengers. The cabins are divided into different categories and are located on decks 8 and 9. The public area of the ship are decks 7, 8 and 9, where there are conference rooms, a restaurant , a lounge and a cinema . There are also shops, a casino and a fitness area.
The parking spaces for vehicles are on three decks below the areas accessible to passengers. The parking lanes have a total length of 2,613 m (so-called " loading meters "). The ship is usually accessed via two levels, two ramps on top of each other at the stern, and at the bow via a bow visor and a side loading gate. For this purpose, there are corresponding ramps to the upper vehicle deck in both ports. Swiveling ramps inside the ship also connect the wagon decks with one another and when closed form a watertight section.
