The Peter Pan is a RoPax ferry of the German ferry company TT-Line . The ship currently in use is the fifth of the company to bear this name. The Peter Pan is registered in Sweden , her home port is Trelleborg . It was classified by Germanischer Lloyd .

history

The original version of the Peter Pan at the exit in Travemünde
The Peter Pan can also be recognized by the images of its namesake on both sides.

The use of the fairy tale characters Peter Pan and Nils Holgersson for naming their ships follows a TT-Line tradition that goes back to the founding years. The now fifth Peter Pan was in the SSW ferries and special ships GmbH on 4 September 2000 Bremerhaven to put Kiel . The launch followed on March 3, 2001 . Problems with the propulsion system postponed the delivery of the ship, originally planned for August 2001, to October 26, 2001. The ship was christened on November 3, 2001 by Evelyn Jenckel. Then the ship took up the liner service.

From mid-December 2017, the ship at German Dry Docks in Bremerhaven was extended by 30 meters to around 220 meters and received a new bulbous bow. Deck 5, which was open in the stern area before the conversion, was covered with a protective deck . This increased loading capacity by 25 percent and reduced emissions per loading unit by 25 percent. The central nave section was built at Pella Sietas . At the same time was the stem of the bugs shortened to improve the clarity of the ship's officers. After several delays in the renovation, the Peter Pan went back into service on May 30, 2018.

Machine system and drive

Due to the relatively tight space in the engine rooms, the total output of the diesel-electric machine system must be generated by a total of five diesel engines . The four MAbs M43-engines run at a speed of 500 / min and with Siemens - generators coupled type 1DK4839-6BE06-L. They generate a total of 26,170 kVA of electrical power  . The MaK-M32 diesel engine drives a Siemens 1DK4839-6BE05-L generator at 600 rpm, which generates a further 2,760 kVA.

The Peter Pan is one of the first ferries to be propelled with propeller gondolas from Siemens- Schottel (Propulsor). The special feature of the SSP 10 type nacelles used is their design with one pulling propeller and one pushing propeller per nacelle. Each 3-blade propeller has a diameter of around 4.5 m and consists of a nickel-aluminum-copper-tin alloy. To ensure stability, the Peter Pan carries around 2,640 m³ of water in ballast tanks . The ship is equipped with a pair of Blohm + Voss -S700 fin stabilizers to dampen roll movements . As a maneuvering aid, two transverse thruster control systems from the Norwegian manufacturer Brunvoll are installed in the bow area . The systems work with controllable pitch propellers that run at a constant speed of 249 rpm.

commitment

The Peter Pan runs together with the sister ship Nils Holgersson on the Baltic Sea between Travemünde ( Germany ) and Trelleborg (Sweden). The journey time with today's ferries is between seven and a quarter and nine and a half hours. Since 2013 the Peter Pan has also offered occasional departures from Rostock . In addition, two other ferries operate on this route, mainly for cargo traffic.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The Peter Pan can accommodate up to 744 passengers. The cabins are divided into different categories and are located on decks 8 and 9. The public areas of the ship such as conference rooms, a restaurant , a lounge and a cinema are also located here . There are also shops, a casino and a fitness area.

The parking spaces for vehicles are on three decks below the areas accessible to passengers. The parking lanes have a total length of 2685 m (so-called " loading meters "). The ship is usually accessed via two levels, two ramps on top of each other at the stern , and at the bow via a bow visor and a side loading gate. For this purpose, there are corresponding ramps to the upper vehicle deck in both ports. Swiveling ramps inside the ship also connect the wagon decks with one another and when closed form a watertight section.

Incidents

  • Just a few days after commissioning, the Peter Pan collided with the pier while sailing in heavy weather in Trelleborg .
  • On January 29, 2004, the drive system on the starboard side failed. The damage was repaired during a two-week stay in the shipyard at Blohm + Voss in Hamburg .
  • On May 13, 2004, the port drive failed. The propeller nacelle was dismantled at Blohm + Voss. The ship then went into operation with only one drive unit. However, the trips had to be carried out with a tow escort. At the end of September 2004, a replacement drive was installed in the dry dock of the Neptun shipyard in Rostock . The originally installed drive could only be reinstalled in the spring of 2006 at the Öresund shipyard in Landskrona (Sweden). After successful test drives, the Peter Pan resumed ferry operations on April 23, 2006.
  • On October 28, 2013, the stern of the Peter Pan tore itself away from the pier in the port of Trelleborg by strong winds from hurricane Christian . The ferry turned until the stern rested on the opposite pier, which damaged one of the two propeller pods. The stern had to be pulled from the pier with a tug. The ferry then drove to the Landskrona shipyard for repairs on its own.
  • On July 9, 2019, there was a fire in the ferry's engine room, which could be extinguished with on-board resources. The ferry, which was on the way from Rostock to Travemünde, was brought to Travemünde with the help of a tug.
