Founded in 1850 as "Shipyard and Machine Factory by Wilhelm Zeltz and Albrecht Tischbein ", it was converted in 1890 under Director Henry Eugen Johns into the "Neptun" Shipyard and Machine Factory in Rostock . Under John's successor, the young board member Gerhard Barg , it expanded rapidly. More than 1500 new ships were built, and even more repaired and rebuilt. The first iron screw steamer in Germany, the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz , was launched in 1851.

During the First World War , minesweepers of the types M 1914 , M 1915 and M 1916 were built for the Imperial Navy , as well as from 1918 UF submarines , some of which were still launched, but were no longer completed due to the armistice, but scrapped immediately were. In addition, the Neptun shipyard was also intended for the construction of the basement type .

From 1927 the shipyard belonged to the Deutsche Schiff- und Maschinenbau Aktiengesellschaft .

During the Second World War , the Neptun shipyard, together with the Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke, formed a focus of the armaments industry in Rostock. From 1941 ten type VII C submarines and from 1944 minesweepers of the 1943 class were built.

After the end of the Second World War, the shipyard was converted into the Soviet joint-stock company SAG Neptun . In the post-war years, reparations were mainly carried out for the Soviet Union (USSR) such as the construction of new lifting vessels and loggers. In 1953 the SAG became a state-owned company and from that point on the shipyard was called VEB Schiffswerft Neptun . The shipyard facilities were continuously expanded until 1989, most recently they extended from Kabutzenhof to Bramow. At the time of the fall , the shipyard had over 7,000 employees. The shipyard Neptun included a repair yard for military ships in Gehlsdorf , a part of the company in Patriotischer Weg, a car workshop on Budapester Straße and the company sports ground “Rote Erde” on Hans-Sachs-Allee. Cargo ships, fish loggers, lifting ships, fire boats, ferries, tugs, rail ferries , research ships , floating cranes, bucket chain dredgers, RoRo freighters and multi-purpose container freighters were manufactured.

After German reunification , the shipyard belonged to the Bremer-Vulkan network and in 1991 had to stop building new ships due to EU restrictions. In 1993 the name was changed to Neptun Industrie Rostock GmbH , and in 1997 the company became part of the Meyer Werft group of companies.

Since 2001, ships have been built at the new location further down the Warnow at the Neptun shipyard: however, this mainly relates to long river cruise ships such as the A-Rosa Bella or the Viking Longships , as these are not subject to EU restrictions for new ships . In 2011 and 2018, the double-end ferries Schleswig-Holstein and Norderaue were also completed for Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum GmbH , which operates them in the North Frisian Wadden Sea . Furthermore, one concentrates on the modernization and repair of all kinds of floating vehicles as well as the production of shipbuilding equipment components . These include, for example, components for RoRo ships or luxury yachts as well as ferry docks and cranes . In March 2006 the company name was changed from Neptun Stahlbau GmbH to Neptun Werft GmbH . In addition, machine room modules are manufactured at the Neptun shipyard, which are installed at the shipyards in Papenburg and Turku.

The company employs around 525 people; About 600 people are employed by supplier companies (as of March 2016). The shipyard has been a GmbH & Co. KG since 2014.

In October 2016, it was decided to build a new shipbuilding hall, Hall 8a, with completion in 2018. The foundation stone was laid on June 29, 2017. The construction costs around 50 million euros. The hall is 180 meters long and 65 meters wide.

Former shipyard site

The former shipyard on the edge of Rostock city center is being redesigned and rebuilt in terms of urban development. Office buildings and residential buildings in particular were rebuilt after many buildings and facilities (such as the slipway and the elevated route with various supply lines ) had been demolished. The harbor promenade continues along the Warnow across the property towards Warnemünde. The last remaining harbor crane is a listed building; it was renovated and repainted in 2014 for 300,000 euros. The former driver's pulpit is used as the registry office's wedding room, and the roof of the gutted machine house serves as a viewing platform.

The "International House of Tourism" was also built on the historic shipyard site as a control center for tourism in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

The bunker is a cultural meeting point. The former clubhouse, which was badly damaged after a fire, was demolished in 2011 because it could no longer be used. The large shipbuilding hall, which is also under monument protection, was converted into a shopping market. The shops were placed as a new building in the (outer) shell of the hall, the south-western nave is used as a parking lot, so that a weather-protected entrance was created.
