Live and act

Born as the son of the shipyard owner Cornelius Christian Hinrich Johns (1820–1901) and his wife, the Scottish writer Annie Wellstood-Johns (1819–1911), he studied at the Technical University of Karlsruhe after completing his schooling and apprenticeship and was then in Kiel and Ruhrort active. In addition, he acquired the captain's license. He was a war veteran from 1870 to 1871. He initially worked for three years as director of the Germania shipyard in Kiel (1882–1885) before he was appointed head of the Rostock Neptun shipyard . Under his aegis (1885-1892), the Neptun shipyard managed to emerge from a deep crisis and, in 1890, to convert it into a stock corporation. Johns was also largely responsible for the fact that the shipyard built a steel barque for the first time and thus put itself at the forefront of German shipbuilding technology.

In 1892 he set up his own shipbuilding office in Hamburg. During these years he worked as an expert for the Chamber of Commerce and as a designer for the deputation for trade, shipping and trade. He was also a member of the Maritime Professional Association and assessor of the Maritime Office. As a technical expert he advised the classification societies in Great Britain, the USA, Italy and Japan.

Johns and his wife Margarethe (1867–1952) had sons Henry (1894–1942) and Curt Max (1898–1983). Johns was related to the Hamburg Senator Eduard Johns .
