The Kieler Sprotte is a German passenger ship. It drove under the names of Grand Duchess Alexandra , Walter and Ueckermünde for around 90 years in the Western Pomeranian Bodden waters and in the Szczecin Lagoon . It is operated and launched as a museum ship by an association in Kiel .

The ship was built in 1905 as a steamship Grand Duchess Alexandra by the “Neptun” shipyard and machine factory in Rostock . In the same year it was put into service by the Ribnitz-Wustrower-Dampfschiffs-Gesellschaft in Wustrow . The Grand Duchess Alexandra was deployed in the scheduled and excursion service primarily for vacationers on the Darß-Zingster Bodden chain between Ribnitz and Wustrow and the seaside resorts on Fischland , Darß and Zingst . The ship was no longer fully utilized after the expansion of the railway network in the area in the 1920s.

In 1930 the ship was sold to A. Birkit, from whom it was acquired a short time later by the captain Walter Krusemark from Barth . He continued to use the ship, renamed Walter , for the Bodden trip and for occasional trips to Stralsund and Hiddensee . During the Second World War , the steamship served as an important means of transport on the line from Barth to Prerow and Zingst and to Dierhagen and Wustrow. In 1955 Walter Krusemark had the Walter converted into a motor ship at the Barth boat and repair yard.

The city of Ueckermünde bought the ship in 1963. As the fifth ship since 1862 with the name Ueckermünde , the motor ship was managed by the municipal special purpose association Hafftourist and continued to be used for passenger transport. By resolution of the city council, Ueckermünde was placed under protection as a technical monument in 1989 . After the reunification , the ship remained in the ownership of the city of Ueckermünde until 1993 and was operated by a development association. The captain D. Hess from Belau bought the ship in 1993 and moved it to Kiel after the end of the season. Then there were further changes of ownership. In 1996 the ship was renamed Kieler Sprotte . So far the last owner is the Kieler Verein Museumsschiff Kieler Sprotte eV

The sprat is symbolized by two mermaids on the bow of the ship.

technology

The ship is 21.75 meters long and 4.80 meters wide. The draft is 1.80 meters. As a steamship it was measured at 48.04 GRT , the Kiel Sprat is given as 54 GT .

The steam engine had an output of 70 hp. With one screw the ship reached 9 knots . In 1955 the ship received the 100 HP diesel engine of the tug Hella , which was replaced in 1972 by a 150 HP diesel engine SKL 6 NVD 24. This achieves 10 knots.

The steamship had a crew of 6, the motor ship had 4 men. The number of passengers was 140 on trips on the lagoon and bay. Today, the Kiel Sprat is designed for 50 people.
