It consists of several bays or lagoons lined up in a west-east direction , which are separated from the open Baltic Sea by the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula . The water surface is 197 km² , the average water depth is only about 2 m.

In detail, the Darß-Zingster Boddenkette consists of

(Order from west to east; some smaller connecting waters are not taken into account here).

Bodstedter and Saaler Bodden

The salt content of the water increases from west to east, as there is only a connection to the Baltic Sea at the east end of the Bodden chain via the Gellenstrom and the small opening between Großer Werder and Kleine Werder , where water can be exchanged. Earlier connections to the sea such as the Prerowstrom in the north (after 1872) and in the west of the Permin and Loop on the Fischland (in the 14th century) were closed by humans. The Recknitz and Barthe rivers flow into the Darß-Zingster Bodden chain ; the catchment area has a total area of 1,578 km². The towns of Ribnitz-Damgarten and Barth are on the south bank of the Bodden chain .

The northern part of the Darß-Zingster Boddenkette is part of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park .
