Location of the former island of Großer Werder

The Großer Werder peninsula is a nature reserve in the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park . It lies in the wind tidal flats and is surrounded by a mosaic of small, partially nameless islands.

history

The island became a peninsula in 2006 due to the increasing siltation of the sea inlet. This phenomenon occurred every now and then in the 1970s and 1980s and resulted in the Großer Werder being shown inconsistently on maps either as an island or as a peninsula. The Große Werder was inhabited until the first half of the 20th century.

location

The Große Werder is located southwest of Hiddensee , west of the island of Bock and connects to the east of the Zingst peninsula . It belongs to the municipality of Groß Mohrdorf in the Vorpommern-Rügen district in northeast Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The Grabow is to the south and the Baltic Sea to the north .

Curiosities

Due to the lonely location of the only homestead, the island was given the nickname "Ostsee-Hallig".
