A windwatt is that part of the littoral that is temporarily dry due to the action of the wind .

distribution

In Germany, wind flats can be seen in the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park on the Baltic Sea .

Emergence

Unlike in the Wadden Sea of the North Sea , ebb and flow do not determine the hydrodynamics in the wind tide . Instead, the water is pushed out of the lagoon into the Baltic Sea by strong offshore winds , so that particularly flat areas fall dry due to the wind. This water flows back when the wind turns or subsides.

habitat

Wind flats offer plenty of food for the migratory birds that pass in autumn . In addition, they are one of the most important sleeping places in Western Europe for the cranes that cross the Western Pomeranian lagoon landscape on their migration.
