About this picture

Belau is a municipality in the Schleswig-Holstein hill country in the Plön district . Perdöl and Vierhusen are in the municipality.

Geography and location

Belau is located on the east bank of the Belauer See , 5 km southeast of the municipality of Wankendorf and 25 km south of the city of Kiel .

history

Belau was first mentioned between 1264 and 1289 as Belowe . It is assumed that the place name derives either from the Old Polish / Slavic term for "swamp" ( bel) and associated with Belauer See, from a nickname (place of Bel) or from the Slavic word b'aly for "white, bright, silvery shiny ”.

The municipality of Belau was created in 1928 when the manor districts were dissolved, when the then rural municipality of Belau (571 hectares) with 208 inhabitants and the Perdöl manor district (917 hectares) with 181 inhabitants were combined to form the new municipality of Belau.

The population of the community doubled after the Second World War due to the influx of displaced people , but fell back to around 320 in the second half of the 20th century as a result of various resettlement campaigns.

In Perdöl there was a station on the Neumünster – Ascheberg line .
