Location of the municipality of Hohwacht (Baltic Sea) in the Plön district | ||
Hohwacht (Baltic Sea) is a municipality in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein . It consists of the villages of Haßberg, Hohwacht, Neudorf, Niedermühle and Schmiedendorf.
geography
Hohwacht lies in the Wagrien countryside .
history
The place name was first mentioned in 1557 as "Hohenwacht".
Hohwacht lost its original importance as a port at the end of the 19th century as a result of the newly built Malente-Gremsmühlen-Lütjenburg railway line between Malente and Lütjenburg , six kilometers from Hohwacht . The first people looking for relaxation came from the cities by train - especially to Haßberg. A first spa center was built here, which was then shut down again at the instigation of the Neudorf estate. Nevertheless, impressive buildings from that time can still be found in the place. For example, the historic bathing houses unique in Germany or the Genoese ship, a house from 1880 with a three-story thatched roof. Immediately after the end of the First World War , Hohwacht became the target of artists around the painter Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and his biographer Rosa Schapire with Bernhard Hoetger , Curt Stoermer and Heinrich Vogeler . Schmidt-Rottluff initially remained loyal to Hohwacht as a holiday home , but Hohwacht did not become an artists' colony .
Towards the end of the Second World War there was a concentration camp external command in the center of the village . Here, two hundred concentration camp prisoners and three hundred forced laborers from twelve nations manufactured control parts for the V2 rocket under SS supervision .
Today's community was originally called Neudorf and was given the name Hohwacht (Baltic Sea) on September 1, 1963.
In 1976, passenger traffic on the branch line from Malente-Gremsmühlen to Lütjenburg was discontinued (in Lütjenburg there was the closest train station up to this point); today the next passenger stations are in Oldenburg (Holst.) and Bad Malente .
1986 Hohwacht received the title of Baltic Sea Spa . In 2012 the status in Ostseebad was changed.
Worth seeing, right in the dunes, are the bathing huts that have not been preserved in their original form anywhere else in Germany.
coat of arms

Gut Neudorf
Gut Neudorf used to ship its grain from Alt-Hohwacht. The manor house and several buildings on the estate are owned by the von Buchwaldt family , are still preserved today and are classified as a cultural monument.
economy
Hohwacht was originally characterized by agriculture and fishing, today tourism is the main source of income.
