Geography and traffic

Wankendorf is located in the Wankendorfer lake area , about 15 km east of Neumünster near the Stolper See and Belauer See . The community is located on the Autobahn 21 from Kiel to Bad Segeberg .

history

A local history museum is now set up in the reception building of the former train station

The place was first mentioned in 1316. Its name is derived from Wanikendhorpe , meaning village of Waniko . Wankendorf was founded by the Saxons when they tried to drive the Wends out of the region.

In 1866 the Neumünster – Ascheberg railway was opened. Wankendorf received a station for passenger and freight traffic. On December 2, 1911, the Kiel – Segeberg small railway went into operation ; it was given a separate station in Wankendorf, also for passenger and freight traffic. These two stations were not connected to each other. The small train was shut down on December 31, 1961 and dismantled soon after.

Today's municipal area was created when the estate districts were dissolved in 1928, and Gut Perdoel and other surrounding estates still bear witness to this today. Since 1970 Wankendorf has been a rural central town that is increasingly opening up to the industrial branch.

In 1985 passenger traffic between Neumünster and Ascheberg was discontinued, until 1988 some freight wagons were still delivered. So far, a large part of the tracks has been dismantled and the road crossings overhauled.

economy

After the Second World War, the community changed from an agricultural to a commercial character. The steadily growing new building areas, which are exclusively reserved for residential areas, also bear witness to this.

Leisure, sport and tourism

The local museum of local history is located in the former station building on the disused Neumünster – Ascheberg railway line .

The local popular sports club is TSV Wankendorf, founded in 1906 . It includes offers in several areas. Originally operated as an integrated division in TSV Shotokan - Karate became an independent Shingi- 2005 Dojo removed.

The Evangelical Church in Wankendorf was built in 1894 according to plans by the Hamburg architect Hugo Groothoff .
