Dietrich Theden

Dietrich Theden (born June 15, 1857 in Bansrade / Holstein , † November 1909 in Funchal / Madeira ) was a German writer .

Life

Dietrich Theden was the son of a farmer . He attended elementary school in his hometown and prepared for the profession of elementary school teacher . After working as an assistant teacher for a few years and completing the teachers' seminar in Eckernförde , he worked from 1879 to 1884 as a teacher at orphanages in Wandsbek and Hamburg . During this time he published a "Guide to Youth Literature" and his first narrative works. From 1884 Theden was part of the editorial team of the " Gartenlaube " in Leipzig , which in 1888 moved to Stuttgart . From 1890 he published the youth magazine "Universum" and from 1894 to 1896 the weekly magazine "Zur Gute Stunden". From 1896 he was a freelance writer.

Dietrich Theden was the author of novels and short stories ; he operated u. a. in the field of youth literature and crime fiction . He also edited the works of Friedrich Gerstäcker and Balduin Möllhausen .

From an afterword by Barbara Neuhaus (source: Verlag Das Neue Berlin / GDR 1985): “Today the author is almost forgotten. Not yet thirty, he exchanged the rural surroundings for the metropolis of Berlin. His experiences as an educator and resident of a big city left traces in his only crime novel Misanthropists , 1904. This story speaks for Theden's sense of justice. He fights for truth, honesty and goodness. It is the Berlin between the first and second founding years. Around Potsdamer Platz, where Theden's characters mainly act, there are vacant apartment buildings and business premises, sleazy lawyers cheat their clients, brokers and speculators have lost their purchases, and poverty haunts the city. Theden does not value this as a reflection of social conditions, he regards the appearances as God's will and thus of order or as the result of human behavior. The educator Dietrich Theden also occasionally looks through, who warns against treating children and adolescents with emotions and incomprehension. He continues what he has previously represented in his numerous children's books. But what inspired the writer to undertake the adventures of his main protagonist Hunter alias "misanthropist" in Australia? After Bismarck's colonial policy, distant countries became more interesting for citizens and petty bourgeoisie. The general ideas about it were associated with danger and wealth. And you always wanted to get to know more of it. The consumers of the entertaining magazines for which Theden worked as an editor wanted to feast on so-called true reports with a shudder. Obviously Theden wanted to satisfy needs and offer something new. The weekly papers of the time may have been the inspiration for the design of the characters as well as for the language and style. The author is in no way different from the entertaining writers of the turn of the century. Reading was no longer a privilege in Theden's time. The bourgeois daughters rummaged in their circles, the maids secretly in the kitchen. They all wanted to be excited by the bad guys and come to terms with the good guys. "
