The old seminar in Eckernförde

The old seminar or teachers' seminar is a listed building in Eckernförde .

building

The main office of the tax office in Eckernförde-Schleswig is housed in the building at Bergstrasse 50 in the Borby district . It was built from 1883 to 1885 in the neo-renaissance style with brick ornaments typical of the time. A fire in February 1922 destroyed large parts of the building. Due to the prevailing frost, the hydrants could not be used and water had to be fetched from the frozen harbor. In 1982 the building was dismantled in accordance with a listed building. After 1924, the building was initially used as a district office for the old Eckernförde district .

seminar

The royal school teachers' seminar came to Eckernförde from Tondern in 1858 . Initially located on Kieler Straße, the teachers' seminar finally moved to the newly built building (architect: Janert) on Mühlenberg Borbys on April 11, 1885 due to the damage caused by the storm floods in the Baltic Sea in 1872 . The seminar was closed in 1924.

Training at the Royal School Teachers' College lasted three years and could only be started after passing an entrance examination. The future teachers were also trained to be organists and cantors . This was also reflected in the curriculum, which was strongly influenced by religion and music. Services were regularly attended together in the Borby church . In the seminar, festive celebrations were held on the occasion of the Sedan Day and the birthdays of the German emperors . Of the total of 72 men from Eckernförde who volunteered for the First World War , 55 were students at the seminar.
