The tax office for central auditing services is responsible nationwide for tax investigations, fines and criminal matters as well as large-scale and corporate audits. In addition to the main office in Kiel, branch offices are maintained at the Elmshorn, Flensburg and Lübeck locations.

With the Erzberger reform , a unified Reich finance administration was created in Germany . As lower tax authorities, tax offices arose at the level of the districts. The legal basis was the announcement on the seats and districts of the tax offices of June 16, 1920. For the province of Schleswig-Holstein , the state tax office of Schleswig-Holstein was superordinate to the tax offices.
