Chain of lakes
The Bornhöveder chain of lakes consists of six lakes:
- Bornhöveder See
- Schmalensee
- Watching lake
- Stumbling Lake
- Schierensee
- Fuhlensee
The Alte Schwentine flows through the first four lakes, the latter two are connected to the water network of the other lakes via receiving waters. The Alte Schwentine leaves the Stolper See at its northern end and flows on over the Postsee and the Schwentine into the Kiel Fjord .
Due to their chemical composition, all six lakes are predominantly eutrophic and rich in nutrients , have a high production of plankton and thus visibility depths of 1 to 2 m. They belong to a dimictic - holomictic lake type with summer temperature stratification.
