The Postsee (formerly also Pastsee ) is a lake west of the town of Preetz in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein . It extends in a southwest-northeast direction.

At a lake level of 20.6  m above sea level. It has an area of 276.4 hectares above sea level . The villages of Postfeld , Sieversdorf and Pohnsdorf are located on the Postsee . It is located in the communities of Preetz, Pohnsdorf, Postfeld and Kühren .

The Postsee naturally consists of a north and a south basin, between which there was a narrow lake near Sieversdorf. During the construction of the Kirchbarkau – Preetz – Lütjenburg small railway , a dam was raised there and a bridge was built. After the railway was dismantled in 1938, this path is only used by cyclists and pedestrians. Its most important tributary, the Alte Schwentine (Kührener Au), flows east of Postfeld into the southern part, leaves the northern part in Preetz and finally flows into the Schwentine .

The lake area was given as 341.7 ha in 1915, so it has decreased by around 65 ha. This is partly due to siltation , but partly also to the lowering of the lake level, which was aimed for in the 19th century. The water level in 1915 is 21.5  m above sea level. NN and is about 80 cm above the current one. The water level in the Postsee fluctuated by one meter between 1954 and 1966, with values between 20.5  m above sea level. NN and 21  m above sea level NN were frequent.

Northern part of the Postsee

The bottom of the northern basin drops more steeply from the bank than in the southern part of the lake, which is reflected in the northern tip of the lake, the Hörn, with cliffs on the western bank. At the bottom of the lake there are several depressions with a depth between 6 m and 8 m. The mean depth of the northern part is 3.89 m. A large island in the south became a peninsula due to the lowering of the lake level , whereas a new island with an area of 0.23 ha emerged in the Hörn. The only major tributary to the northern part is the Neuwührener Au.

Southern part of the Postsee

The bottom of the southern lake basin slopes gradually from Postfeld to Sieversdorfer Brücke and reaches its greatest depth of 9.1 m before Sieversdorf. The mean water depth is 3.93 m. In the middle of the southern part there is a 0.25 hectare island overgrown with alder and willow bushes . In addition to the Alte Schwentine, the Nettelau (Mühlenau) to the east, the Honigau to the west of Postfeld and some ditches flow into this part of the lake.
