The Stolper See is located in the southwest of the Plön district on the western edge of the eastern hill country of Schleswig-Holstein . The village of Stolpe is located directly on the lake, the municipality of Stolpe is partly the owner of the lake.

The Stolper See is one of the lakes through which the Alte Schwentine river flows. It flows into the Stolper See in the southeast at Gut Perdöl and leaves it in the north near the Depenauer Mühle. Another tributary of the Stolper See is the Schierenseer Au, which flows into the south. It is 132.6 ha in size and up to 14.6 m deep. Its length is about 2.5 km. At the widest point it is about 700 m wide.
