Matt Reis (2006)

Matt Reis (born March 28, 1975 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is a former American football goalkeeper . He is currently the goalkeeping coach for the United States National Football Team .

Life

Reis was a football player from the University of California, Los Angeles and was signed by the Los Angeles Galaxy in 1998 . Since the then goalkeeper Kevin Hartman had a regular seat at the time , Reis had hardly any appearances in the first five seasons in the MLS . Most of the games, namely 16, he then played in 2001 when he stood in for the injured Hartman. In 2002 he moved to New England Revolution.

At New England he was initially only a substitute, but was appointed goalkeeper in mid-2004. He was the first goalkeeper to save two penalties in a playoff game, as happened when they defeated the favored Columbus crew . He also held two of the four penalties in the penalty shoot-out against Chicago Fire in the first round of the playoff. Reis was also a contender for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2005 and 2006. He made his first international appearance for the US national team on January 22, 2006, in a 0-0 draw against Canada. He won the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in 2007 with New England.

Matt is also known as a jester among his teammates and American football. He disguised himself as an April Fool's joke after the board had announced the engagement of Luis "El Lobo" Fangoso by putting on a wig and a headband. Although the prank was soon forgotten, those jokes helped win many of his team's fans over to him (to this day, New England Revolution fans make funny comments about fangoso when discussing player engagements). On April 1, 2007, the association announced that the contract with Fangoso had now expired after two years.

Rice, who is bald, also convinced his Mexican team-mate José Manuel Abundis , who was bought as a reinforcement shortly before, to get a bald cut for the 2006 playoffs. This has brought Reis a cult status among the fans, who have since called him a “bald, short-sleeved shot-stopper”.
