Großbarkau is a municipality in the Barkauer Land region in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein . The village was founded by Wenden . The original name Barkau was later transferred to the neighboring villages of Kirchbarkau and Klein Barkau , which were not founded by Wenden. Apart from the village of Großbarkau, the community has no other districts.
Geography and traffic
Großbarkau is located on the federal highway 404 between Kiel and Bad Segeberg about 9 km northeast of Bordesholm and about 11 km south of Kiel. From 1911 to 1961 Großbarkau was the railway station of the Kleinbahn Kiel – Segeberg , from 1910 to 1930 it was also a stop of the Kleinbahn Kirchbarkau – Preetz – Lütjenburg .
history
Großbarkau was first mentioned between 1264 and 1289 as Brocove or Wendisch Brocowe , which is derived from the Old Polish personal name Broch or Brochoslaw. In 1400 Detlev Brockow sold the liens to the Preetz monastery . In 1420 the Preetz Monastery bought four of the five Hufen (farms).
religion
53% of the residents of Großbarkau are Catholic, 2% Protestant. The Lutherans of the place belong to the parish Kirchbarkau of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . For the few Catholics, the parish of Francis of Assisi , based in Kiel , which belongs to the Archdiocese of Hamburg, is responsible.

After the local elections in 2018, the voter communities WGG had five and DLG four seats in the community council. The mayor Daniel Smederevac of the WGG has been in office since June 25, 2018.
