Geography and traffic

Wendtorf is located east of the Kiel outer fjord and is divided into the two districts Marina Wendtorf and Wendtorfer Strand directly on the Baltic Sea and the old town center a few hundred meters inland.

history

A first place at this point was first mentioned in 1240. In 1440 the place was named Wendtorf. In 1796 the first houses were built near the beach. The former fishing village lives from tourism today.

Wendtorf nature experience area

The village, which has already been awarded the title of the most beautiful village in the country , has some places worth seeing:

  • The new harbor promenade with a small museum harbor

Marina Wendtorf

At the sports boat harbor, the former fishing port, in the Wendtorfer Strand district, a holiday home complex with five high-rise buildings was built in large panel construction for the sailing events in Kiel for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich . They were supplemented by a row of shops made of concrete pavilions and various leisure facilities, such as B. mini golf course or a long-disused badminton hall or a small outdoor pool that is also closed. At that time, a community kindergarten was built here, which was used by the Wendtorf community and the surrounding communities of Stein , Lutterbek , Heidkate and Barsbek until it was closed and integrated into the kindergarten in the center of Wendtorf .

The area has fundamental similarities with the Olympic Center Kiel-Schilksee , which, in addition to the continuous division as an apartment complex , was underlined by the individual house names such as Drachen or Flying Dutchman .

The complex with over 500 apartments was operated by Marina Wendtorf KG. Since the establishment of the complex, most of the individual apartments have been sold to private individuals or smaller real estate companies, who in turn rent them out as holiday apartments. Due to this procedure and the lack of a concept for long-term use, the system is regarded as a depreciation object for which only expressly prescribed repair work has been carried out. As a result, the structure of the building is partially attacked, the surrounding areas are only well maintained in a few areas and several buildings and leisure facilities between the residential buildings have been empty for decades and are partially dilapidated or damaged by vandalism.

In 2007 Marina Wendtorf KG had to file for bankruptcy and was finally dissolved in 2008. Since the bankruptcy, another investor, Sven Hollesen from the Planet Group , which specializes in tourism projects , has been planning to modernize and expand the marina for 50 million euros.

The marina was completely renovated in 2014 and has since enjoyed great popularity again.
