The Olympiazentrum Schilksee (also "Olympiazentrum Kiel-Schilksee" - sometimes (inappropriately) referred to as "Olympiahafen ...") is a complex of a yacht harbor, residential buildings and shops in the Kiel district of Kiel-Schilksee in Schleswig-Holstein - at the exit of the Kiel Fjord . The marina is one of the largest on the German Baltic Sea coast.

The Schilksee Olympic Center was the venue for the sailing competitions during the 1972 Olympic Games and has been part of the Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein Olympic Base since 1988 .

Today the Olympiazentrum Schilksee is the venue and port for the sailing competitions during the Kiel Week and other sailing events.

Emergence

On the site of the Schilksee Olympic Center there was already a harbor for yachts and fishermen before it was built.

The decision to build the competition facilities for the 1972 Olympic Games, which were awarded to Munich on April 26, 1966 , was made on March 18, 1967, and construction began on October 13, 1969.

An elongated (approx. 300 m long), staggered concrete crossbar with 400 apartments, a spectator terrace, shops, boat sheds, a swimming pool etc. was built in parallel to the existing port - surrounded by parking lots and green spaces - in the southwest two high-rise buildings with (168) apartments, in the northwest a hotel with 500 beds and a settlement with 32 bungalows .

The opening of the Olympic competitions in Schilksee took place on August 28, 1972.

From August 29 to September 8, 1972, races were held in the six boat classes Finn (boat class) , Flying Dutchman , Starboot , Tempest , Dragon and Soling on the competition tracks in front of the Schilksee Olympic Center.
