Tempest sail plan

The Tempest is a sporty 2-person sailing boat with a keel , trapeze and spinnaker . Despite the keel, it behaves very much like a dinghy and starts planing quickly. Due to its construction, it straightens up again after capsizing and therefore offers a high level of safety potential.

In 1972 the Tempest replaced the star boat as the Olympic keelboat, but was ousted from the Olympic status by the star boat again after 1976 because of its wider distribution and its very strong class organization.

The distribution of the class is particularly high in Central Europe (Germany, Switzerland and Austria) as well as in England and France. In the USA and Australia there are still remnants from the Olympic period.

World championships in the Tempest class have been held every year since 1967. In 2006 Martinique hosted the World Cup. In 2018 the World Cup took place in the Attersee district in Austria . In 2019 the World Cup took place at Tegernsee in Upper Bavaria.

Historical

  • The prototype was designed by Ian Proctor
  • In 1965 he won in Medemblik (Netherlands) with a superior victory against 13 other competitors with 8 out of 9 won races (in the race that was not won, he had to give up while in the lead because of a broken oar). In an additional final race, he was loaded with sandbags to test the dependency on the team weight, and won the race anyway.
  • In 1965 the Tempest became international class,
  • 1968 Olympic class,
  • 1972 Tempest took part in the Olympic Games in Kiel , Germany,
  • 1976 Olympic Games off Kingston (Canada),
  • 1976 Olympic status lost to the star boat .
