history

Soling GER 315
Soling on a space sheet course

Jan Herman Linge (1922-2007), Norwegian designer and member of the technical committee of the ISAF was in 1963 one of the first who learned of the intention of the international association, to become too expensive 5.5 by a smaller, cheaper and easier to transport keelboat class to replace. A design competition was announced and Linge also took part with his “Soling” project. The Soling won the comparison races off Travemünde and also met all the requirements of the IYRU, which laid the foundation for an almost unique boating career. Just one year later, in 1967, the new ship became international class , and in 1972 Olympic class . The IYRU-controlled and rapid ascent of the Soling to the largest Olympic boat has a great advantage, namely the strict and precise building regulations . The Soling was used until the 2000 Olympic Games .

Then he was replaced by the Yngling , also designed by Jan Linge . The lost Olympic status has caused some unrest in the Soling class. After a few difficult years, the class is slowly starting to recover. The class suffered another setback shortly before the 2006 World Championships in Annapolis , where a major fire destroyed the entire fleet of boats at the Abbott shipyard, the leading manufacturer of Solings in North America, including many Solings that were about to be delivered to the World Cup. Since the summer of 2007 Solings have been produced in Argentina, which are supposed to cover the worldwide increasing demand for ships.

Sailing characteristics

Although the Soling, with more than half of its total weight concentrated in the keel, is a real keel ship because it is safe from overturning , it sails like a dinghy in many ways . The narrow, high sail plan with the jib that does not protrude behind the mast provides high propulsion power on the one hand, but on the other requires very precise trim . The shape of the hull and keel allows the ship to go very high upwind on the cross . At the same time, however, the Soling can under spinnaker provided regardless of the weight, corresponding strong wind on raumen courses to glide come.
