Theodor Karl Friedrich Stoltenberg (born June 25, 1850 in Wendtorf , † February 9, 1937 in Schleswig ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and provost at Schleswig Cathedral .

Life

Theodor Stoltenberg was a son of the teacher and organist Detlev Stoltenberg (* October 27, 1823 in Schönkirchen ; † July 12, 1876 there) and his wife Anna Caroline, née Plagmann (* January 6, 1822 in Probsteierhagen ; † August 9, 1876 in Schönkirchen). The mother was a daughter of the innkeeper and baker Joachim Plagmann (1782-1854) from Probsteihagen and his wife Antje, née Havemeister (1780-1858). From the fall of 1865 until his final exams in 1870, he attended the Kiel School of Academics . He completed a subsequent degree in theology in Leipzig and Kiel. In the spring of 1875 he passed the official examination and was ordained in July of the same year. He received his first position as an adjunct in Preetz , then in Kotzenbüll .

In April 1876, Stoltenberg took over a pastor's position as a compastor in Gettorf . In March 1888 he went to Süderbrarup as a pastor and in May 1895 changed to the Schleswig Cathedral as the main pastor . In 1899 he became provost of the provost of Schleswig. At the same time, he continued to look after the Schleswig Cathedral until 1921. After the end of active working hours, he moved to Schleswig.

Act

Stoltenberg tried to bring church and people closer together. Since in the second half of the 19th century parts of society increasingly turned away from the church and the number of visitors to church services and the Lord's Supper decreased, he joined the National Association for Inner Mission in 1875 and worked for it during his time as provost. He was also committed to the " Gustav-Adolf-Verein ", which helped Protestant communities in the diaspora , and supported the work of the association in his provost.

Stoltenberg promoted the church press and suggested creating their own community newspapers. He himself wrote popularly designed smaller texts that appeared in several magazines. In addition, he supported rural communities in building small churches and chapels in order to shorten the distances to the places of worship. Due to the lack of financial resources, he needed the support of the community members.

In 1904 Stoltenberg designed the altarpiece for the new Schuby church . He tried to cultivate the Low German language in church services , something Heinrich Hansen might have encouraged him to do. Stoltenberg translated 60 hymns into Low German. In 1920 the “Plattdütsch Gesangbook” came out in print.

Stoltenberg was very interested in history and music, presumably since childhood, and tried to revive the old Lutheran order of worship. For this reason, General Superintendent Theodor Kaftan appointed him to a commission that was supposed to set up a new agenda . In the context of this work, Stoltenberg was particularly concerned with the musical implementation of the liturgy. The new liturgy was published in 1892. During his time as provost, Stoltenberg tried to implement the new agenda quickly in all of the provost's parishes. For this purpose he published texts and melodies himself. At the end of his service, all parishes with the exception of Kropps , where a more extensive liturgy was used, had implemented the new form.

Stoltenberg belonged to the "Provincial Association for Church Music in Schleswig-Holstein" under the direction of Rochus von Liliencrons . He organized advanced training for organists and was available as an adviser to communities who wanted to have their organs rebuilt or rebuilt. During his time at Schleswig Cathedral from 1915 to 1920, an organ was rebuilt by Marcussen & Søn .

Stoltenberg appeared popular, knew how to deal with simple people and was known throughout the Schleswig Propstei. During his time in Gettorf he wrote a church chronicle that went to print in 1880. In his retirement he made more historical studies. So he revised the book “Angling”, published in 1844 by Hans Nicolai Andreas Jensen . Stoltenberg added the prehistory and reissued it in 1922. In addition, from 1925 on he wrote several articles on the history of the Schleswig Cathedral, which appeared in the Schleswig News .

Honors

In 1902 Stoltenberg received the Prussian Red Cross Medal 3rd class, in 1916 the 2nd class medal . In 1904 he was awarded the 4th Class Red Eagle Order , and in 1914 the 3rd Class Royal Crown Order . In 1917 he received the Iron Cross 2nd class in the version for non-combatants .

family

On July 11, 1875, Stoltenberg married Minna Heimreich in Preetz (* May 30, 1850 in Preetz; † December 25, 1922 in Schleswig). Her father August Heimreich (1807–1890) was a provost in the parish of Kiel from 1849 to 1879 and married to Agnes, née Jeß (1811–1886).

The Stoltenberg couple had a daughter.
