These communities are Barmissen , Boksee , Bothkamp , Großbarkau , Honigsee , Kirchbarkau , Klein Barkau , Löptin , Nettelsee , Postfeld and Warnau . The region is characterized by a relatively uniform landscape and by communities with a similar number of inhabitants (between 185 and 743 inhabitants) and area (between 2.16 km² and 13.8 km²).

Emergence

As part of a state-funded rural structural and development analysis in 1997/98, it was suggested to promote the development of the region through a common name, the "Barkauer Land", and the formation of a citizens' association. The "Bürgererverein Barkauer Land" was created. This citizens' association has six permanent working groups (culture, children and young people, senior citizens, settlement development and economy).

The "Cultural Summer in the Barkauer Land", which has been taking place regularly since 2001, is well known. He made a major contribution to the fact that the actually artificial term "Barkauer Land" has become naturalized in the population of the region and beyond.
