The Hohwacht flounder is a pier and viewing platform on the beach in the municipality of Hohwacht in the Plön district in Schleswig-Holstein .

History and architecture

The approximately 60 m long and 370 m² large pier in the Baltic Sea was rebuilt in 2004 according to plans by the architect Jochen Schöning, the community's long-time local planner (structural engineering: Ingenieurbüro Mohn GmbH). After four months of construction, it was opened on August 13, 2004.

The platform got its name because of its unusual shape, reminiscent of a flounder , a flatfish of the European coastal waters. The then district administrator of the Plön district, Volkram Gebel, pointed out in his opening speech, however, that the locals traditionally call the fish flounder "flounder" and that the name for the pier was actually wrong in their eyes. The eponymous design of the Hohwachter flounder can be clearly seen in aerial photographs , for example on a full-page color photo that was published in August 2018 in the Deutsche Bahn customer magazine mobil as part of the article Ready for a bridge day .

The structure on the main bathing beach of the municipality of Hohwacht can be reached via a three-meter-wide, barrier-free wooden walkway from the DLRG tower. The construction hangs on suspension ropes on a 24 m high, light blue painted pylon with a golden dome three meters above the water level and is additionally supported from below by numerous piles. Hardwood was used for the planking and railing of the platform . On the three differently angled sections of the pier there is a children's play area, a bathing deck and several seating and lounging options.

The construction costs of the Hohwachter flounder amounted to 720,000 euros, 80 percent of which were taken over by the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the Plön district.

Due to the shallow water , the pier is not suitable as a pier . It was designed primarily as a tourist adventure promenade as well as a viewing and event platform. Both found on its open-air concerts and yoga classes held wedding ceremonies and religious services. Since its opening, the Hochwachter Flounder has not only developed into a tourist attraction that is pointed out in travel guides, but also a popular meeting place for the Hohwachter population. It became the modern symbol of the small community.
