After BSG Chemie Buna had played regularly in the second-rate GDR league since 1973 , it surprisingly succeeded in advancing to the top division in 1981. The BSG went into their only league season in 1981/82 with 19 players, of which 17 players were used during the season. The reported goalkeeper Ingolf Zänker and the reported attacker Andreas Meyer were not used in the GDR Oberliga. In the course of the season, three more players, Rainer Desens , Ulrich Göcht and Thomas Meichsner, were added to the league. In the second half of the season, the 19-year-old Dieter Ceranski had to replace the forward Frank Kuhnt, who had left the Halleschen FC Chemie . A total of 21 players with an average age of 25.9 years were used in the league during the 1981/82 season.
